SOLD SOLD (19/04) **MINT BORE**1774 – 1802 English Robert Wogdon London 50 Bore Flintlock Overcoat Pistol With Safety Bolt & Ram Rod. Sn 21393:64 - 21393:64 The English London based Gunsmith Robert Wogdon (1733-1813) is recorded as having premises at Cockspur St, Charing Cross in 1764 & Haymarket 1774- 1802 (see page 216 of British Gunmakers Vol 1 by Brown). This is an excellent flintlock overcoat pistol by Robert Wogdon. It is 7 ¼” overall length with a 3 ¾” round steel barrel. The barrel’s smoothbore is near mint clean & bright. The underside of the barrel has crisp black powder proofs / inspection marks. The action has foliate engraved decoration around oval panels. one panel is signed ‘Wogdon’, the other ‘London’. It has a steel cock fitted with flint. The cocking and firing mechanisms work crisply and it has a sliding safety bolt to the rear of the action. The original walnut stock is undamaged. **RARE**SHORT PRODUCTION PERIOD**1799-1803 English Dunderdale & Mabson Birmingham 80 Bore Flintlock Pistol With Turn Off Barrel & Folding Bayonet. Sn 21393:63 - 21393:63 This an excellent flintlock pocket pistol made By Dunderdale & Mabson who were quality English Gun makers located at Newton Street, Birmingham for just 4 years between 1799-1803 before joining with another gunmaker named Labron (see page 35 of English Gunmakers By Bailey & Nie). It is 7 ¾” overall length (with bayonet folded) and has a 2 ½” screw off barrel (the muzzle of the barrel is grooved for tool to turn off the barrel. We do not have the tool). The barrel’s smooth bore has just light staining consistent with age and use. The barrel has a 2 ¼” triangular folding bayonet which is released by sliding the trigger guard to the rear. The bayonet locks in place when open and is released for closing by depression of a steel button on the bayonet block. The underside of the frame has proof marks. It's action is decorated on both sides, one side with Martial banners & arms & on the left side with the manufacturer's name 'Dunderdale & Mabson' within a foliate edged panel. The action has a sliding safety bolt to the rear of the cock which is fitted with flint. It has its undamaged original bag shaped wood grip. The trigger guard is decorated with a stylised star motif. The weapon cocks and dry fires crisply. The price includes UK delivery. **MASSIVE**19th Century North African / Moroccan/ Arabic 25 Bore Miquelet Lock Camel Musket With Decorated Brass Barrel Bands & Ram Rod. Sn 21450 - 21450 Miquelet lock is a modern term used by collectors and curators, largely in the English-speaking world, for a type of firing mechanism used in muskets and pistols. It is a distinctive form of snaplock, originally as a flint-against-steel ignition form, once prevalent in Spain, Portugal, Italy, the Balkans, North Africa, the Ottoman Empire and throughout Spain's colonies from the late 16th to the mid 19th centuries. The miquelet may have come to the attention of arms makers in Istanbul & North Africa via long-established trade routes from Italian city-states through the port of Ragusa (Dubrovnik) to provinces on the Balkan Peninsula. Other avenues were probably provided by booty from corsair raids and/or from the many Ottoman-Euro conflicts of the period. The muzzle loading weapons were generally handmade weapons, and consequently they widely varied in their construction. They usually had very long barrels. The stocks were handmade and ornately decorated, featuring a distinctive curve which is not seen in the stocks of other muskets. The function of this curve is debated; it may be purely decorative, or it may have allowed the weapon to be tucked under the arm and cradled tightly against the body, as opposed to being held to the shoulder like a typical musket or rifle. These type of guns were often carried by warriors mounted on Camels. This is a 19th century miquelet lock Camel musket. It measures 5 Feet 1 Inch overall length. It has a 47” sighted steel barrel which is 25 Bore. The bore has heavy staining and residue consistent with age & use. The barrel has hand tooled brass barrel bands. The shoulder stock has typical thick tropical hardwood butt plate. The musket has a steel ram rod. The weapon has the wear and patina to be expected of a native North African / Arabic weapon of its age. The lock plate and cock have naïve markings (illustrated in image 2). The cocking spring is strong but the lock does not cock. Delivery of this item will be by arrangement, at cost & within the UK only. English C1783-1792 Henshaw Cambridge Flintlock Traveling Pocket Pistol With 38 Bore Screw Off Cannon Barrel With Ornate Silver Butt Cap. Sn 21393:62 - 21393:62 John Henshaw was an English gunmaker recorded as working in Cambridge 1783-1792 when the business was then continued by his widow (name unknown) see page 98 of English Gunmakers by Baily & Nie. This is an excellent flintlock pistol by Henshaw. It is 7 ¾” overall length with 2”, turn off cannon barrel. The barrel’s smoothbore is clean. The underside of the action has crisp black powder proofs / inspection marks and number ‘2’. The action has foliate engraved decoration & scrolling banners one side signed with ‘I. Henshaw’ (most likely John Henshaw, his widow or one of his family. We cannot find a Cambridge gunmaker named I. Henshaw in our books). The cocking and firing mechanisms work crisply. The original walnut stock is excellent, chequered for grip & undamaged. The butt is fitted with an ornate silver butt cap depicting a basket of flowers and bird. The price includes UK delivery. SOLD SOLD (11/04) Pair Of English HW Mortimer London Gun Maker To His Majesty 38 Bore Gentleman’s Flintlock Traveling Pistols, Period Converted To Percussion With Octagonal Barrels & C1843 Irish Registration Marks WB (Waterford Borough). Sn 21393:61 - 21393:61 HW Mortimer and his son Harvey Walklate Mortimer were London gunsmiths' between 1753 and into the 1800s with premises at Fleet Street (see page 187 of British Gunmakers London By Brown). The Mortimer family made Firearms by Royal Appointment. This is a very good pair of traveling pistols by HW Mortimer, London. The pistols have 4” octagonal steel sighted barrels & undamaged original walnut stocks with chequered panel pistol grips. Both grips have void white metal escutcheons. Each barrel are faintly signed by the maker ‘HW Mortimer’ and partially visible London address. Both barrels also have Irish registration marks, one WB-219’ the other ‘WB’ with indistinct number (the prefix WB was allocated to Waterford Borough (these Irish County identification marks were introduced by the short lived Arms Act of 1843). The smooth bores have staining consistent with age. Both pistols have been period converted from flintlock to percussion and have safety bolts (the lug on one bolt is absent). The pistol's cocking & firing actions work crisply. The lock plates of both pistols are signed ‘HW Mortimer’ and ’89 Fleet (Street)’. The pistols have brass fittings including trigger guard with extended tang and Pineapple finial decorated with foliate panels and Martial arms. Both pistols have their ebonised wood ram rods. C1830 Liege Belgium 54 Bore Percussion Pocket Pistol With Screw Off Rifled Barrel, Folding Concealed Trigger & Hinged Patch Box. Sn 21393:60 - 21393:60 This is a nice percussion pocket pistol made in Liege Belgium C1830. The pistol’s action has foliate engraved decoration. The barrel and action have Liege proof / inspection marks (illustrated). The pistol measures 6” overall & has a just over 2” turn off barrel ( the muzzle is slotted for tool to assist barrel removal, we do not have the tool). The barrel’s rifled bore has just staining consistent with age & use. It has a concealed folding trigger & undamaged bag shaped ebony grip which has a patch box at the butt. The hinged lid of the box has foliate engraved decoration. Its cocking & firing actions work crisply. The price includes UK delivery.
