1858 - Early 1860’s American Civil War Era Eli Whitney (Whitneyville Armoury) USA .36 Naval Calibre, 6 Shot Single Action (Remington Army /Navy Type) Percussion Revolver With Octagonal Barrel. Sn 20709:6 - 20709:6 The Whitneyville Armoury USA was founded 1798 in New Haven Connecticut by Eli Whitney. Whitney produced approx. 33,000 revolvers to compete with Colt & Remington patent revolvers. Many were purchased by the Union Army & Navy and saw service in the American Civil War. In 1888, the Whitney Arms Company was sold to the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. This is a nice original 7 ½” octagonal barrel Eli Whitney Remington Navy type .36" Calibre, 6 shot percussion revolver with drop down loading lever. The frame is similar in appearance to Remington Army & Navy Revolvers. The lever is stamped with number that looks like ‘5380’ and has an ‘L’ factory inspection mark. The bore has just light staining consistent with age and well defined rifling. The metal work even aged patina throughout. The top of the barrel has visible but faint ‘E.Whitney N.Haven’ address. The pistol has a small brass post fore sight, notched hammer and grooved frame rear sight. It has a brass trigger guard. Its original Walnut grips have just light bumps and bruises consistent with age and use. The pistol's single action cocking and firing mechanism is crisp. The price includes UK delivery. NB. Sn 20709:3 - 20709:3 The Colt Model 1860 Army was a muzzle-loading cap & ball .44-calibre revolver used during the American Civil War. It was used as a side arm by Cavalry, Infantry, Artillery troops, and Naval forces. This Colt Model 1860 Army revolver is in good condition. The pistol has an 8 " round steel barrel and measures 14" overall. The pistol's rifled bore has just light staining consistent with age and use. The metal work has even aged patina. The weapon has the correct brass blade foresight and 'notched hammer' rear sight. It has a captive 'lever' ramrod. The barrel is stamped with manufacturer detail 'Address Col. Saml Colt New York U.S. America'. The pistol has matching serial numbers '16643’ on the frame, brass trigger guard, butt of the grip frame & cylinder. The serial number dates the pistol’s production to 1863. The cylinder has faint ships under sail engraved scene. The action is marked ‘Colts Patent’ and the brass trigger guard ‘.44 Cal’. Sn 20694 - 20694 C1870 English Black Powder Obsolete Calibre Single Barrel Rotary Underlever Break Action Wildfowling Shotgun. It is 10 bore and has a 39” 2 stage browned steel barrel. Its smooth bore is clean. It has an attractive walnut stock with chequered grip panels and polished horn fore end cap. The underside of the wrist is inlaid with void brass disc. The action plate and barrel are signed by the maker or retailer ‘W P & W Skelton Warrington (Cheshire)’. The inside of the action block has black powder proofs. SOLD SOLD (08/04) C1865 English Reilly London Double Barrel 10 Bore Muzzle Loading Percussion Sporting / Hunting Shotgun With Damascus Steel Barrels. Sn 20696 - 20696 This is an excellent English form Double Barrel 10 Bore Muzzle Loading Percussion Sporting / Hunting Shotgun, numbered 5759 under each barrel. . It has 27” Damascus steel barrels & measures 43” overall. The barrel’s smooth bores have staining & residue consistent with age and use. The barrel has a small bead fore sight. It has an undamaged walnut stock with chequered panel wrist. A void German silver escutcheon is inlaid on top of the wrist. The action & trigger guard with extended tang are nicely engraved with a foliate design. Both action plates are signed by the maker ‘Reilly’ (most likely Edward Michael Reilly who was an English Gunmaker between 1861 & 1869 who had premises at 315 & 502 New Oxford Street, London, operating as E.M Reilly & Co, see page 195 & 196 of English Gunmakers Vol.1 By Brown). **MATCHING NUMBERS**Brace Of Substantial Model 1798 Austrian Cavalry Officer’s 15 Bore Flintlock Pistols With Liege Proofs By Gottlieb Bentz & Brass Furniture. Sn 20616 - 20616 This is an excellent, large & heavy pair of Model 1798 Austrian Cavalry Officer’s 15 Bore Flintlock Pistols. Both pistols have 9 ¾” round steel barrels (each 17” overall length), original iron ram-rods and original Walnut one piece full stocks with blackened brass furniture including cudgel butt caps with iron lanyard rings and brass muzzle block with cast blade foresight. The barrel’s smooth bores have staining and residue consistent with age and use. The lock plates of each pistol have matching numbers ‘853’. The pistols have other un-matching numbers and possible Regiment marks (all illustrated). Both barrels have Liege ‘ELG’ proofs and are signed by the maker ‘G (Gottlieb). Bentz’ (illustrated). Victorian British Hollis & Sheath Birmingham Makers To Her Majesty’s War Department Enfield Volunteer’s Private Purchase, 2 Band .577 Calibre Muzzle Loading Percussion 2 Band Rifle With 3 Groove Rifling. Sn 20647 - 20647 Hollis & Sheath were English, Birmingham based Gunmakers with premises at Weaman Row & 49 Whittall Street between 1849 to 1861 when the Business succeeded to Isaac Hollis & Sons (see page 251 of British Gunmakers Vol.2 by Brown). Hollis & Sheath also made military weapons for the British Board Of Ordnance. This is an excellent, original British Volunteer’s private purchase 2-band Percussion Rifle in .577" calibre. The action plate is faintly signed signed ‘Hollis & Sheath Makers To Her Majesty’s War Department’. It has all original walnut stock with steel butt plate, steel fore end block, bayonet bar & trigger guard with extended tang. The rifle also has its original steel ramrod, block with blade fore sight none standard graduated ladder rear sight with copper aiming ladder band (illustrated in image 3).The barrel’s bore has just light staining & residue consistent with age and use & its 3 band rifling is well defined. **RARE**MINT BORE**C1900 British Military A&N CSLtd London (Army & Navy Co-operative Stores Ltd) Martini Action .297/230 Obsolete Calibre ‘The British Cadet Rifle’ With ‘Take Down’ Action. Sn 19081. - 19081 This is an excellent Martini Action .297/230 Obsolete Calibre Cadet Rifle. Many of these rifles were sent to Australia for their military training. It is rare to find British examples without Australian marks. Our rare example without Australian Government marks is complete with sling Swivels, cleaning rod, block & blade foresight, adjustable graduated 50-100-200 yards ladder rear sight and steel butt plate. The steel barrel's bore is near mint clean & bright with typical light rifling and it has a crisp martini action which works crisply. It has all original wood furniture and metal work. The barrel is marked ‘The British Cadet Rifle’ & has calibre detail. The action is crisply stamped ‘A&N CSLtd London (Army & Navy Co-operative Stores Ltd)’ (Army & Navy Stores was a department store group in the United Kingdom, which originated as a co-operative society for military officers and their families during the nineteenth century. The society became a limited liability company in the 1930s and purchased a number of independent department stores during the 1950s and 1960s). **RARE**MINT BORE**C1880 Imperial British Enfield Afghanistan Mashin Khana Kabul Arsenal Martini Henry .577x 450 Obsolete Calibre Infantry Rifle. Sn 20636 - 20636 By 1880, the so-called Great Game between the Russian Empire and Great Britain over Central-Asia entered one of its final phases after the British victory in the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-1880). In the web of diplomatic and political maneuvers so apparent during this turbulent period, it was of paramount importance for the British Crown to keep the Russians at bay and reduce their influence on Afghanistan as much as possible. After the second Anglo Afghan war Great Britain installed a new, far more cooperative Emir, Abdur Rahman. He is considered to be the father of the modern state of Afghanistan & with a modern State, you need a modern Army with modern Small Arms to defend against the threat from Russia & the capability to produce them indigenously, all of which, the Emir was far too aware of. The British crown with the help of the British arms maker Enfield & Emir Abdur Rahman set up a modern arms and munitions factory in Kabul. Called, Mashin Khana by the locals. Today, we know it as the Kabul arsenal. The Kabul machine works is a little-known and often very misunderstood producer of small arms. However, period products of this Armoury are now making their way to the collectors market. It is estimated that, between 5 and 8000 of each type of Martini-Henry variants may have been produced using Enfield machinery & parts. 7 types of Enfield quality Martinis made at the Kabul armoury have been identified and classified. Extrapolating from there puts production figures between 35 and around 56,000 pieces, not many survived. This is an excellent, rare, example of an Enfield quality Martini Henry .577x 450 Service Rifle made at the Mashin Khana Kabul Arsenal. The metal work is undamaged and is in the white. It is stamped on its right side with the Kabul Arsenal ‘towers with flags’ device & Perso-Arabic script. The rifle has other Perso-Arabic script markings. The 33” barrel’s rifled bore is near mint, clean with crisp multi groove rifling. The rifle’s cocking and firing actions are crisp. It has sling swivels, steel butt plate, steel ram rod, bayonet lug, rear graduated ladder sight and block & blade fore sight. It has all original woodwork. The wood is undamaged with just light bumps and bruises consistent with age. The price for this rare Martini includes UK delivery. *MINT BORE**C1850 British Enfield Tower Liege Belgium Contract .650 Carbine Calibre British Sea Service Customs / Revenue Type Muzzle Loading Percussion Pistol With Brass Fittings, Captive Steel Ram Rod & Belt Bar. A 586 - A 586 Due to heavy production demands for Sea service pistols the British Admiralty turned to their Belgian allies to produce Sea Service pattern pistols to supplement British made supplies. Liege pistols, although not the fine quality of the British version, were robust, heavy and well made resulting in other nations Governments also contracting Liege pistols for their armed forces. This is an original Victorian, Liege contract Tower Sea Service Customs / Revenue type percussion pistol. It is 12” overall length with 6” blued steel barrel in .650 Carbine Calibre. The barrel’s smooth bore is near mint clean and bright. The barrel is un-sighted. The Walnut full stock is a nice deep brown with regulation pattern brass furniture & has just light bumps & bruises to be expected with age and service use. It has its original captive steel ram rod & steel lanyard ring to the brass butt which is numbered ‘744’. The action plate is marked ‘Tower’ & with Crown VR (Victoria Regina). C1840 Spanish Form Ladies Or Youth Size Percussion 12 Bore Single Barrel Muzzle Loading Sporting Shotgun. Sn 20512:5 - 20512:5 This is an antique muzzle loading 12 Bore Single Barrel Muzzle Loading Percussion Sporting Shotgun in Spanish form. It has a 28 ½” two stage browned steel un-sighted barrel and measures a short 44 ½” overall making it ideal for ladies or youth use. The barrel has German silver bands and roundel insert at the breech. The barrel's smooth bore has staining & residue consistent with age and use. The action tang, hammer and action plate have engraved with foliate decoration. The trigger guard has extended tang with Pineapple finial. The wrist of the stock has chequered panels. The top of the wrist is inlaid with void German silver escutcheon and it has a German silver fore end block. The stock is fitted with a steel butt plate with extended tang & under the barrel are steel ram rod mounts. The stock is all original with just light bumps and bruises to be expected.
