C1830 English E. Shaddick Or E.S Haddick Taunton (Somerset) Pair Of 54 Bore Boxlock Percussion Pocket Pistols With Screw Off Barrels & Folding Concealed Triggers. Sn 21393:58 - 21393:58
This is an excellent pair of percussion pocket pistols made C1830. The matching pistols are beautifully engraved with foliate decoration. Both have Dolphin hammers and sliding safety bolts. One side of each pistol is marked by the manufacturer or retailer which reads either ‘E. Shaddick’ or ‘E.S Haddick’ and the reverse 'Taunton' (we cannot find this gunmaker in our books). Both measure 5 ¾” overall & have just under 1 ¼” turn off barrels. The barrel’s smooth bores have just light staining. A tool is required to assist barrel removal, we do not have the tool. Both pistols have concealed folding triggers & the underside of the actions & barrels have black powder proof marks. They both have undamaged bag shaped wood grips mounted with void white metal void silver escutcheons. Their cocking & firing actions work crisply. This is an elegant Balkans / Turkish Ottoman flintlock pistol. It is 20 ¼”overall with a 13” steel barrel. The barrel’s smooth bore has staining and residue consistent with age and use. The barrel has a blade fore sight and shallow groove rear sight. It has its original full wood stock ornately decorated with silver escutcheons & silver wire inlays. The wood is excellent, carved with foliate decoration. It has a steel cock fitted with flint, pan with hinged frizzen and foliate engraved lock plate. The cocking & firing actions work. There are no external maker or date marks on the pistol. The price for this attractive piece includes UK delivery. SOLD SOLD (09/04) **QUALITY MAKER**MINT BORE**C1800 Durs Egg London 16 Bore Flintlock Duelling Pistol With Sighted Damascus Steel Barrel. Sn 21546 - 21546
Durs Egg (1748–1831) was a Swiss-born British gunmaker, noted for his quality pistols and for his company's production of the Ferguson rifle. Egg was apprenticed in Solothurn and Paris before establishing his own business in London in 1772. He was a contemporary of Joseph Manton, Jean Samuel Pauly and the uncle of Joseph Egg. When the famous gunsmith Durs Egg died in 1831 his Son John Egg took over the business operating at Haymarket London. In 1839 The business name reverted to Durs Egg at 4 Pall Mall London until 1854 then at 4 Colonnade Pall Mall from 1855 to 1865. This is a quality flintlock duelling pistol by Durs Egg. The pistol has steel fittings including butt plate, fore end block, cock fitted with flint, safety bolt & enlarged trigger guard for gloved hand. The pistol measures 15" overall & has a 9” Damascus steel barrel with blade fore sight and ‘v’ notch plate rear sight. The top of the barrel is signed ‘D. Egg London’ highlighted in Gold and there is a Gold band on the barrel at the breech. The smooth bore is near mint clean and bright. The original walnut stock has chequered panels at the grip. The pistol’s wood ram rod has a polished horn cap and steel worm tip. The cocking & firing actions work crisply. The price for this quality pistol by a prestigious maker includes UK delivery. Cased C1830 English HW Mortimer London 28 Bore Percussion Overcoat / Traveling Pistol With Accessories. Sn 21532:4 - 21532:4
HW Mortimer and his son Harvey Walklate Mortimer were London gunsmiths' between 1753 and into the 1800s with premises at Fleet Street (see page 187 of British Gunmakers London By Brown). The Mortimer family made Firearms by Royal Appointment. This is an English Percussion Overcoat / Traveling Pistol by HW Mortimer with later fitted case. The pistol measures 8” overall and has a 4” octagonal steel barrel. The barrel’s smoothbore is clean. The barrel has a bead fore sight. It has a steel trigger guard with extended tang and finial, steel ramrod flutes. The action has light foliate engraved decoration and has the makers name ‘HW Mortimer’. It has its original walnut full stock which has just light bumps & bruises consistent with age and deep cut chequering and punch decoration at the grip. The pistol has an iron ram rod. It’s cocking and firing action work. The pistol comes with its later fitted wood case. The case with hinged lid has a lock (key absent). The inside of the case is fitted and lined with felt to hold the pistol and its accessories which consist of a small roll of lint, a quantity of moulded lead balls and an empty TE Mortimer labelled percussion cap tin with removable lid & a brass & copper pistol size powder flask with sprung Nozzle and American Eagle embossed decoration. The inside of the lid has a Mortimer trade label. The exterior of the case has inlaid line decoration and a mother of pearl escutcheon. This is an English Percussion Overcoat / Traveling Pistol. The pistol measures 11” overall and has a 5 ½” octagonal steel barrel. The barrel’s smoothbore is clean. The barrel has a bead fore sight. It has a steel trigger guard with extended tang and finial, steel ramrod flutes. The action has light foliate engraved decoration and has the makers name ‘Perrins’ (most likely either John working in Worcester 1834-1853 or Thomas working in Windsor Berkshire 1843-1851, see page 101of English Gunmakers by Baily & Nie) . It has its original walnut stock which has just light bumps & bruises consistent with age. The stock has a polished horn fore end cap and chequered grip panels. The pistol has an ebonised wood ram rod with white metal cap. It’s cocking and firing action work. The price includes UK delivery. SOLD SOLD (LAY-AWAY 15/03) Gurkha Model 1837 Brunswick Percussion .66” Calibre 2 Groove Rifle and Sword Bayonet. Sn - 21490
This is an original Gurkha model 1837 Brunswick percussion .66” 2 groove rifle complete with its original brass hilted sword bayonet and is part of the horde discovered in the old Palace of Lagan Silekhana in Katmandu, Nepal. This rifle and bayonet are in excellent condition with good wood and metal work, being manufactured at the state arsenal in Nepal. The gun has a steel back action lock plate with brass trigger guard, butt plate with a finger rest, fore end cap and barrel wedge plates. The musket is fitted with a 2 leaf rear sight, one of which is hinged and foresight together with its original mushroom head steel ram rod and 2 iron sling swivels. The musket measures 46 ½ inches in length with a 30 ¼ inch barrel where the 2 groove bore is clean with staining consistent with use. The trigger guard, inside the patch box and rear of the bayonet bar are engraved in Nepalese script as to the regimental issue. The musket’s cocking and firing action works crisply. The muzzle is fitted with a steel bayonet bar and is complete with its original brass hilted Nepalese model 1838 sword bayonet. The single edge blade has a short back edge and measures 67cm long with a 55cm blade. See pages 30 – 32 & 123 - 128 including the plates in Guns of the Gurkhas, (The lost arsenal: pistols, rifles and machine guns of the Royal Nepalese Army, 1816 – 1945) by John Walter.
