**RARE**CAPTURED**Boer War ZAR (Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek) Contract Mauser Model 1896 7.9mm Calibre Rifle By Loewe & Co Berlin With Boer Name & Address Carved In Stock ‘J.J.A. Jordaan Reebokfontein Dist. Standerton Z.A.R’**UK 2005 DEACTIVATION** - 22117
The Boer Republics of the Orange Free State (OVS or Oranje Vrij Staat) and the South African Republic (ZAR or Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek) had been at odds with the British Empire for decades. Events led to open hostilities and knowing War with the British Empire was imminent, the Boers rushed to purchase firearms to arm their citizen-soldier Commandos and shipments of German Mauser Rifles were purchased by the ZAR and OVS States. It was common practice for Boers issued with rifles to carve their names and often scenic or religious imagery into the wood stocks of their weapons. This Mauser Model 1896 Rifle is one of the rifles purchased by the Boers. It is almost certainly one of many captured by the British during the War. The woodwork and metal work are all original. The wood has just light knocks bumps and bruises consistent with age and use and has an old stable repair to the lower part of the stock between the rear sling swivel and butt plate. The breech housing is stamped 'MOD MAUSER 1896 LUDW. LOEWE & CO BERLIN' together with number 'B 4060' which is repeated on the magazine plate and bolt. The metal work has small Imperial German inspection marks. Typical of weapons used in the War it has the original Boer Kommando’s name & address hand carved into the stock ‘J.J.A. Jordaan Reebokfontein Dist. Standerton Z.A.R’ within panel (illustrated). Standerton is a large commercial and agricultural town lying on the banks of the Vaal River in Mpumalanga, South Africa. Standerton was founded in 1878 by The Z.A.R. During the First Boer War (1880–81), a British unit was besieged by the Boer forces who shelled them from the nearby hill, the former holding out until the end of the war in February 1881. Internet resource www.angloboerwar.com lists 206 Boers with the surname Jordaan taken prisoner during the Boer war with information regarding where they were captured and interned. The rifle is complete with block & blade fore sight, flip up rear sight, bayonet lug, steel butt plate and sling swivels. It is without cleaning rod. Deactivated to UK specification in 2005 the weapon cocks & dry fires crisply. The price for this rare historic piece worthy of further research regarding the Boer name includes UK delivery and deactivation certificate. Sn 22117
