**RARE**WW1 Austro Hungarian Trench Fighting Knife By Resicka Vienna & Scabbard. ED 2541 - ED 2541 An original Austro Hungarian WW1 Fighting/Trench Knife & Scabbard. The knife has a single edge 8 ¼” steel blade with an overall length of 13 ¼”. The blade is undamaged and has just light staining consistent with age. The ricasso has the 'R' mark of the manufacturer Resicka Vienna. The smooth wooden scales are secured with steel pins. The oval cross guard has small inspection marks (illustrated). The scabbard is metal, has even patina and no dents. The rear of the throat has 2 fixed strap bars fitted with small webbing belt loop. **ANCIENT BLADE**Late 16th Century Muromachi Bizen Work Japanese Tanto Blade Smith Signed ‘Yuki Mune’, Protective Japanese Maple Wood Shira Saya Resting Mounts Additional Carved Ox Bone Hilt With Wood Blade, Scabbard & Expert Assessment Notes. Sn 18051:1 - 18051:1 This is an ancient Japanese tanto blade which has been assessed by UK Japanese sword expert Bill Tagg. His hand written assessment notes accompany this tanto. Extracts from the assessment and notes include “Looks like late 16th century age (Muromachi) period. This is Bizen or associated provinces work. Its nakago tang shape is typical of this school’s style. The forging is also right for this school. Grain is running itame getting tired& worn on one side with use and polishing over many years. It has a hamon of suguha with very fine nie crystals along the edge. There is also activity inside the hamon which is a sign of good work. The 2 kanji signature I read as Yuki Mune. I can only find one man in my books at this period. Yuki Mune (Eisho 1504-1521 Buzen province used art names Ryokai Yuki Mune. He lived in Usa Buzen Province and was 2nd Generation to use this art name. It was mounted in ox bone carved mount in the late 19th Century, Meiji period for export . The carving is well done depicting Chinese Scholar reading to Children. A nice looking display item”. In his illustration of the blade he adds “cutting edge is just over 8”. Total length just over 10 ½”. Decorative file marks on tang are extreme right slant. Shape of Nakago Jiri is Kuri Jiri”. Late Victorian/ Edwardian Era Bali / Indonesian Native Kris Dagger With Antique Ivory Hilt, Hand Forged Acid Wash Blade, Antique Ivory Scabbard & Antique Ivory Chop Sticks / Hair Tools Mounted On Period Hand Carved Grotesque Murti Vengeful God Stand. - 17740 The Kris is a type of dagger, traditionally worn as a status symbol and carried by warriors. These daggers were said to have originated in Java in the 14th Century but were adopted in all parts of the Archipelago with broad variations between the islands of Bali, Java & Sumatra. The Kris is characterised by its distinctive wavy blade (see 383 to 393 of ‘A Glossary Of The Construction Decoration & Use Of Arms & Armour by Stone where many variants of Kris are described and illustrated). Often these daggers were mounted on carved wood Kris stands in the form of dancers or Grotesque Murti God figures for display in homes and temples (examples of these stands, two with similar grotesque faces as ours are illustrated on page 393 of Stone’s book). The blade of the Kris dagger is given its characteristic shape by folding different types of metal together and then washing it in acid. Kris were often infused with arsenic to add colour / brightness during their forging but the method of doing this was a closely guarded secret among Smiths. This is an excellent Bali / Indonesian Kris made in the late 1800's -Early 1900's. It has a 13 ½” long acid washed, hand forged Kris blade which incorporates its ornate barbed design at the hand guard. The antique ivory hilt is hand carved with typical stylised birds head form and it has an ornate copper or brass ferrule. The dagger measures 16” overall and is complete with its original antique ivory scabbard which has metal bands. The Kris is accompanied by 2 period antique ivory chop sticks / hair tools which are each 7 ¾” length. All are mounted on their original period Kris stand. Hand carved from tropical hardwood and painted in vivid red, white, green black and gold colours the full body sculpture of a kneeling Grotesque figure with ornate ceremonial crown, armour & war like face is typical of Murti vengeful / protective God sculptures seen in Bali / Indonesia. The stand measures 21” tall and the base width is 9 ½” diameter. The base is covered in red felt. Boxed, C1960’s David Andersen Norway Peer Gynt Kniven Tollekniv Viking Knife With Curly Birch Handle & Open Top Leather Scabbard With Norwegian 925 Sterling Silver Mounts. Sn 17028 - 17028 This is an original, boxed Hunting / Fishing Viking knife made C1960’s by the Norwegian Cutler David Andersen with its original silver mounted scabbard. It is 8 ½” overall length with a sharp, 4” steel drop point blade. The blade is crisply marked by the manufacturer ‘David-Andersen Norway’. The knife has an undamaged solid curly birch wood handle. The hilt has a polished Norwegian silver ferrule. The knife comes with its original open top, black leather scabbard which has a Silver throat mount marked ‘D-A 925S Norway Sterling’ together with Norwegian scales hallmark (illustrated). The throat mount has an integral black leather belt loop. The scabbard has a stitched rear seam and Norwegian silver chape. All leather & stitching of the scabbard are intact. The knife has its original cardboard box, with care instructions and details of the Peer Gynt Kniven history of rural Tollekniv Norwegian knife making. It also describes all fittings of the knife hilt and scabbard as being Norwegian Silver. 1874 Dated Johan Engström Eskilstuna Sweden Curly Birch Barrel Knife With Concealed Folding Steel Blade. Sn 15908:5 - 15908:5 One of the most successful Swedish Eskilstuna cutlers was Johan Engström (1846 – 1915). Before setting up his factory in 1874 (Fabriksaktiebolaget Johan Engström), Johan had worked with cutlers and studied knife production in both Sheffield (G. Westerholm & Son) and Solingen. In his early years, Johan mainly produced razors and daggers. Johan added barrel knives to his production line in the 1870’s. The company produced high-quality barrel knives and received international recognition at shows in Sweden, France, U.S.A., and Canada. At one time the well-known US importer Edward Zinn ordered 3000 dozen barrel knives from the Engström company. Johan died in 1915 which marks the end of the Engström company. The knives used for hunting and fishing have an ingenious mechanism. The folding 4” drop point steel blade with brass scales sits inside the barrel shaped Curly Birch wood handle. The blade is released by depression of a ribbed steel lever at the butt of the handle. The folded blade can then be withdrawn from the handle, opened and then pushed back in and through the hilt until it locks in place. The knife measures 9 ¾” overall length when assembled for use. Our example is in excellent condition for its age. The wood handle is has some knocks consistent with age but no cracks or holes. The steel ferrule and butt cap with locking catch and lanyard ring lug are undamaged and function as they should. The blade’s brass scales are undamaged. One scale is crisply dated 1874 together with ‘arrow JE’ trademark of Johan Engström. The blade has just staining and light pitting to be expected. The blade is marked ‘JOH ENGSTROM ESKILSTUNA’. Victorian Era Galles Christiania, Finnish Form, Puukko Hunting / Fishing Knife With Scrimshaw Etched Polished Bone Hilt German Silver Mounts & Tooled Open Top Leather Scabbard With German Silver Mounts. Sn 15908:1 - 15908:1 A Puukko (Finnish pronunciation: [puH0;kH0;o]) is a small traditional Finnish general purpose belt knife ideal for hunting & fishing with a single curved cutting edge, solid hidden tang and, usually, a flat back. This Victorian era Puuko form knife and scabbard are in excellent condition. It is 7 ¾” overall with a sharp 3 ½” steel drop point blade. The blade has just light staining consistent with age. The top and bottom edges of the ricasso are notched. The knife has a solid barrel shaped polished bone handle with superb scrimshaw foliate etching all around. The hilt has a German silver ferrule & pommel cap with nut securing the full tang. The pommel cap has a period stylised engraved monogram which appears to be ‘H.F’ most likely the initials of the original owner of the knife. The knife comes with its original open top, brown leather scabbard which has German silver frame and single steel hanging ring. The ball end chape of the frame has engraved foliate decoration. Early 20th Century, Simbra Industries Argentina Gaucho Cowboy’s Dagger & Alpaca Argentina Scabbard. (Sn 14446 Daggers & Swords) - 14446 Stunning antique facon gaucho knife, small measures collectible piece. Alpacca handle and seath with chiselled with gold filled flowers and small leaves. Seath sealed/markings: ALPACA ARGENTINA. Carbon steel blade with markings/sealed: SIMBRA INDUSTRIA ARGENTINA. Knife. These hunting daggers were used by Argentinian ‘gaucho’ cattle herders / cowboys. The 6 ½” single edged blade has staining consistent with age and it measures 11 ¼” overall length. The back edge of the blade has scalloped decoration. One side of the blade is crisply marked with the manufacturer’s name ‘Simbra’(Simbra Industria Argentina). The plated white metal handle has intricate writhen decoration and a void shield to one side. The dagger is complete with its original plated white metal scabbard with ornate belt bar. The scabbard has foliate, writhen decoration and ornate chape . The mouth of the scabbard is crisply marked ‘Industria Alpaca Argentina’. VERY RARE, WW1 Gallipoli Bring Back, German Made Turkish Contract Machine Gun Crews Trench Fighting Knife With Integral Fold Out Tools In The Hilt, Scabbard & Frog. Sn 13885 - 13885 Although this piece has no visible German manufacturer marks it is of the quality and form of the type of WW1 era German made Turkish Army contract knives most likely issued to machine gun crew’s and would likely have been in service at Gallipoli. The knife has the appearance of a knife bayonet but no apparent means of fitting to a rifle. It has slab wood grips secured by rivets. The grips are undamaged. The grip frame is slotted and has 2 integral hinged fold out tools consisting of a 2 ¼” long shank spike with thumb lever and 2 ¼” slim pyramid shaped spike with side slot for thumbnail opening. The knife measures 12" overall and has a 7 ¾” single edged blade with fullers. The blade has just light staining consistent with age. Its returning wave cross guard has what appears to be Turkish script characters on both sides. The knife is complete with its original steel scabbard which has a frog bar and ball end. The scabbard has no dents. The scabbard is fitted with its original brown leather frog with integral belt loop. The leather and stitching of the frog are intact. C1800 Aikuchi Japanese Tanto & Scabbard With Kozuka Short Knife & Samurai Hair Pin. Sn 13576 - 13576 This is a C1800 Japanese Aikuchi (dirk without a guard) in its original scabbard. The Aikuchi is 13” overall with a 9” single edge clean steel blade which has nice hamon. The tang is unsigned. It has a ray skin handle bound with green cord and decorated with brass Menuki. The scabbard is brown laquered wood and is fitted with its original Kozuka (small knife). The Kozuka is 6 ¾” overall length with a decorated brass handle. The scabbard also has a removable 4 ½” long flat brass pin with engraved decoration most likely a type of hair pin used by Samurai warriors. The Kozuka and pin sit firmly within the purpose made cut out sections of the scabbard at the throat. This is an excellent, original and complete Aikuchi. The price includes UK delivery.
