This is a Victorian double barrel breech loading, break action shotgun by W. Singer (most likely William Singer, Warminster, Wiltshire recorded as working 1841-1859, see page 103 of English Gunmakers by Bailey & Nie). It’s original wood furniture has just light bumps and bruises to be expected with age and use. The shotgun has double 30” steel barrels set side by side with centre rib, bead fore sight, double hammers and double triggers. The action has foliate decoration and is signed by the maker ‘W. Singer’ on the left and right sides. The gun is serial number 2946. Deactivated to UK/EU specification in 2024 the weapon breaks open & its triggers and hammers move. Alexander Martin (established 1778) was a Scottish gunmaker with various addresses in, Glasgow Edinburgh Aberdeen & Stirling. The Company traded until 1988 when it was taken over by John Dickson & Sons (see pages 281-282 of British Gunmakers Vol.2 by Brown. This double barrel hammerless sporting shotgun by Alexander Martin has 26” blued steel barrels. The barrels, set side by side have a central flat top barrel rib and bead foresight. The rib is signed by the maker ‘Alexander Martin Glasgow Edinburgh Aberdeen & Stirling’. The action has Foliate edged panels with the makers name ‘A. Martin’. It has its original wood stock which has just light bumps and bruises to be expected with age and use and double triggers. The wrist & fore stock have chequered panels. The shotgun is number 2424. Thomas Turner was an English gunmaker working in London, recorded as having premises at 19 Brook Street 1884-91 & 172 New Bond Street for just 1 year 1892-93 (see page 209 of British Gunmakers Vol.1 by Brown). This is a quality made sporting shotgun by Thomas Turner made at his New Bond Street premises 1892-93. It has 27” Damascus steel barrels. The barrels, set side by side have a central flat top barrel rib and bead foresight. The rib is signed by the maker ‘Thomas Turner 172 New Bond Street London. It has its original walnut stock in excellent condition with ribbed butt and double triggers. The wrist & fore stock have chequered panels and the underside of the stock has an inlaid void escutcheon. The action has quality tooled decoration. The action in front of the top lever is signed 'Thomas Turner'. The shotgun is number 5872. Charles Osborne commenced trading under his own name C1845 in Lichfield Street, Birmingham but by 1855 he was in Whittall Street, Birmingham where he maintained premises right up until 1928 when the business was acquired by Skimin & Wood, a highly respected gunmaker to the trade. Osborne first opened for business in London in 1881 in the vicinity of Houses of Parliament in 1885 where he stayed until the business left London in 1928. Charles Osborne became a Limited company in 1896. This is a double barrel hammer sporting shotgun by Charles Osborne & Co made sometime in the early 20th Century. It has 30” blued steel barrels. The barrels, set side by side have a central flat top barrel rib and brass bead foresight. The rib is signed ‘Chas Osborne & Co London’. It has its original walnut stock which has just light, bumps and bruises to be expected with age and use, double hammers and double triggers. The wrist & fore stock have chequered panels and the underside of the stock has an inlaid escutcheon. The action is signed by the maker ‘Chas Osborne & Co’ on the left & right sides amongst foliate decoration. The shotgun is number 76862. There are no visible date or maker marks, but there are what appear to be Liege inspection marks on the action (illustrated). The shotgun has double 28” blued steel barrels set side by side with centre rib and double triggers. It measures 45 ½” overall. It has a colour case hardened action.
