1849 British WD Enfield Tower.702 Calibre Muzzle Loading, Percussion Rifled Carbine Stock Impressed ‘Barnett Gunmakers London’. Sn 19164 - 19164
The London based Barnett family of Gunsmiths are recorded at various addresses in London from 1796 to 1908 starting with Thomas Barnett at 134 Minories who later became Thomas Barnett & Sons and later John Edward Barnett at the Minories & 37 Camomile Street, ending as JE Barnett & Sons Ltd at Brewhouse Lane, Leaman Street & Duncan Street (see page 140 of Brown’s book British Gunmakers Vol.1). This is an original British 1849 Enfield Tower made Carbine with stock marked by Barnett. It has excellent all original wood stock and original finish to the metal work. The wood is crisply impressed with ‘WD & Broad Arrow’ and most likely the stock maker’s cartouche ‘Barnett Gunmakers London’. It has a heavy military percussion hammer and the action plate is crisply stamped ‘Crown VR (Victoria Regina) & ‘Tower’ (Enfield) ‘1849’. Its 24" barrel (40” overall) is rifled and has just light staining consistent with age and use. The barrel has proofs. It has a ‘v’ notch block rear sight and block & blade fore sight. It has iron ramrod and sling swivels. The carbine also has brass fore end block, trigger guard, ram rod flutes & butt plate. The carbine cocks & dry fires crisply. The price includes UK delivery. *RARE**U.S Army Springfield Model 1868 .50 / 70 Springfield Obsolete Calibre Erskine S. Allin Trap Door Rifle. Sn 19168 - 19168
This is an excellent, rare to find rifle Model 1868 rifle (converted from Springfield Model 1863). This rifle has the correct trapdoor loading system, modified lock and hammer. It has its all walnut stock which has knocks, bumps and bruises consistent with age and use. The metal work has even patina. The action plate is marked: "U.S (Army) SPRINGFIELD" together with 1863 (model) & American Eagle & Shield mark . The top of the action is marked ‘1870’ (conversion date) together with American eagle and shield mark. The steel butt plate tang is stamped "US" (Army). It has a fixed fore sight and flip up ladder rear sight. The bore of the rifle’s 32 ½” round steel barrel has well defined rifling and is clean. The rifle measures 51 ½” overall length. The rifle has its original steel ram rod and sling swivels. The barrel and breech have matching numbers 14535. The weapon cocks and dry fires and the action is strong. Victorian Pattern 1853 Enfield Snider Conversion .577 Obsolete Calibre 3 Band Rifle With Nipple Protector & Chain & Buff Leather Sling & Socket Bayonet. Sn 19135:16 - 19135:16
The Enfield Pattern 1853 rifle was a .577 calibre Minié-type muzzle-loading rifled musket, used by the British Empire from 1853 to 1867; after which many were replaced in service by the cartridge-loaded Snider–Enfield rifle. This 3 band muzzle loading P1853 Enfield has been contemporarily converted to the breech loading snider system. The rifle has no maker, date or inspection marks. It has all original walnut stock which has bumps and bruises to be expected, brass butt plate, trigger guard, fore end block & steel cleaning rod. The rifle has its original block and blade fore sight and flip up graduated ladder rear sight. Its sling swivels are fitted with buff leather sling. The 36” barrel’s bore has staining consistent with age & crisp rifling. The cocking & firing action works crisply. The rifle comes with an original Socket Bayonet. The socket has the correct locking ring. The clean 17 ½” blade has inspection marks (illustrated). The price includes UK delivery. This is a very good original MK IV 1887 dated .577x .450 Martini Henry, long lever Service Rifle. It is fully ordnance stamped and has its original woodwork throughout. It has block and blade fore sight, flip up ladder rear sight, steel butt plate, sling swivels fitted with leather sling, cleaning rod & bayonet lug. The steel barrel's bore is near mint clean & bright with crisp rifling. The muzzle is fitted with original removable brass muzzle sight protector cover which is stamped with small ordnance inspection mark and has a struck out number (illustrated). The metal work has even patina. The action works crisply. The action is stamped on the right side Crown VR (Victoria Regina) Enfield, Mark IV model designation and dated '1887'. The action is also numbered ‘1190’. The barrel has several Victorian and WD proof inspection marks. There are no Nepalese marks which indicates that this rifle was in solely British Service. The all original woodwork has the knocks bumps and bruises consistent with age and service use. The stock is impressed with number ‘P2.8.2’. This Victorian Lowe Chester 13 Bore Single Barrel Muzzle Loading Single Barrel Percussion Sporting / Hunting Shotgun has a 32 ½” long steel barrel & measures 48 ½” overall. The barrel’s smooth bore has staining & residue consistent with age and use. It has a shallow grooved action rear sight. The gun has an undamaged walnut stock with German Silver fore end cap. The wrist has an inlaid silver escutcheon with engraved stylised monogram. It has a steel butt plate with extended tang, trigger guard with extended tang and Pineapple finial & steel hammer. The metal work has areas of foliate engraved decoration. The barrel has a partial gold band and gold manufacturer cartouche ‘Lowe Chester’ ( either Thomas Lowe recorded at Northgate Street Chester 1815-1834, William Lowe Northgate Street 1847-1869 or James Lowe Five Ashes Hough Green Chester 1864 see page 277 of British Gunmakers Vol.2 by Brown). The shotgun is complete with ebonised wood ramrod with brass end cap and steel worm. It’s cocking and firing actions work crisply. The price includes UK delivery. The Braendlin Armoury, was at one time arguably the largest British commercial manufacturer of Martinis with many of the high-end sporters and volunteer rifles of the era. Victorian British Officers & Militia Units regularly purchased their own Martini Henry Rifles. These Rifles were manufactured under Enfield contracts to the same specification as their Military counterparts and sold into the retail market for private purchase. This is an excellent, original, Victorian private purchase, Martini Henry, short lever carbine size rifle by the Braendlin Armoury. It has its original, cleaning rod, block and blade fore sight, flip up ladder rear sight, grooved trigger & sling swivels. It has all original undamaged woodwork throughout which has just light bumps and bruises to be expected. The underside of the stock is impressed with number ‘1242’. The steel barrel's bore is near mint with crisp Henry patent rifling. The barrel is marked with Henry’s Patent (illustrated) and has proof marks. The Martini Patent marked action works as it should and has 'Bakers Improved Safety Bolt No.120'. The Baker’s safety lever functions as it should. The action is also marked with the Braendlin Armoury, ‘crossed flags B’ device & numbered ‘12680’. The price includes UK delivery.
