Early 1800’s Gun Size Snider Patent Leather Covered Iron Black Powder Flask With Graduated, Sprung Brass Nozzle Charger. Sn 17986 - 17986
The American Jacob Snider invented the Snider patent firearm action which played a major role in the history of British breech loading firearms history. Decoration of 19th century powder flasks varied dramatically with hunting, game animals, foliate, village, military and marine scenes together with a variety of material coverings. This quality flask falls into the Leather covered category (see page 388, the Chapter ‘Leather & Leather Covered’ of the powder flask book by Riling). This is an excellent, gun size, black powder flask by Snider. It’s iron body is leather covered with stitched seam. The screw top brass charger has measurement adjustment ‘3 , 3 ¼, 3 ½, 3 ¾, 4 dram’ and spring lever which is fully functioning with a strong action. The charger is crisply marked ‘Snider’ and with gun trademark. The flask is 8 ½” length and 3 ¾” diameter at its widest. The body has no dents. Early 1800’s Gun Size C & J.W. Hawksley Sheffield Embossed Shell Design Copper Black Powder Flask With Graduated, Sprung Brass Nozzle Charger. Sn 17985 - 17985
Hunting accessories were added to the British Gunmaker James Dixon & Sons Sheffield production line in the 1830s. This included powder and shot flasks in copper and brass, leather shot pouches and hunting belts. Other sporting goods such as wine and spirit flasks, as well as sandwich and cheese boxes, proved to be very popular with consumers. The line continued to expand as firearm technology progressed. A complete catalogue of Dixon's hunting accessories was produced in 1876. Dixon's continued to make these items well into the 1900s. Decoration of 19th century powder flasks varied dramatically with hunting, game animals, foliate, village, military and marine scenes. This quality flask falls into the category of Shell & Bush décor featuring deep embossed shell (see page 286 of The powder flask book by Riling). This is an excellent, copper and brass, gun size, black powder flask by James Dixon & Sons. It is deeply embossed with shell decoration. One of the shells has even aged green patina. The screw top brass charger has measurement adjustment (no grain markings) and spring lever which is fully functioning with a strong action. The charger is crisply marked ‘Dixon & Sons’. Decoration of 19th century powder flasks varied dramatically with hunting, game animals, foliate, village, military and marine scenes. This quality flask falls into the category of Shell & Bush décor featuring deep embossed shell (see page 286 of The powder flask book by Riling). The Sheffield based company Geo & JW Hawksley are recorded at 35 Smithfield 1845 and various addresses on Carver Street Sheffield from 1854 through to the 1940’s when the Company was bought by James Dixon & Sons (see page 114 of Riling’s book). This is an excellent, copper, gun size, black powder flask by C &JW Hawksley. It is deeply embossed with shell decoration and a ring of foliate decoration at the throat. The screw top brass charger has measurement adjustment ‘2 ¼ , 2 ½, 2 ¾, 3’ drams and spring lever which is fully functioning with a strong action. The charger is crisply marked ‘C & J.W. Hawksley Sheffield’. The flask is 8 ¼” length and 3 ¼” diameter at its widest. The copper body has just a few light dents to be expected. There are no cracks, damage or signs of repair. C1865 Liege Belgium Lefaucheux Patent 7mm Pin Fire Obsolete Calibre 6 Shot Double Action Revolver With Ornate Tooled Decoration, Folding Trigger & Antique Ivory Grips. Sn 17902 - 17902
A Belgian 6 shot 7mm Lefaucheux double action pinfire revolver made C1865, number 228357. It has a round barrel with octagonal breech 70mm (2¾”), the breech is marked “E. LEFAUCHEUX IN BREVETE”, Liege ‘ELG*’ proved cylinder. The breech, cylinder and frame engraved with scrolls, strapwork and dogs’ heads in medallions. It has a captive ejector rod, folding trigger, and plain antique ivory grips. The pistol’s bore has light staining consistent with age & crisp rifling. It has a triangular post fore sight and the rear sight consists of a grooved hammer. C1810 English Edward Wilson Liverpool 32 Bore Nipple & Drum Percussion Converted From Flintlock Holster Pistol With Octagonal Barrel. Sn 17713 - 17713
C1810 Edward Wilson is recorded working as a gunsmith at 64 Thomas Street Liverpool (see page 370 of British Gunmakers Vol. 2 by Brown). This is a Wilson Liverpool Percussion holster Pistol, made with flintlock C1810 and later nipple & drum converted to percussion. It is 14” overall length with an 8 ½” octagonal barrel which has a small blade fore sight. The top barrel flat is signed ‘Liverpool’. The smooth bore has staining consistent with age and use. The action tang & trigger guard with Pineapple finial have tooled foliate decoration. The full stock is made from English Walnut which has just light bumps and bruises to be expected with age. The stock has an inlaid void German silver escutcheon. It has its original wood ram rod with polished horn end cap. The is signed by the maker ‘Wilson’ (there were many English gun makers named Wilson in the flintlock and percussion era, but we can only find Edward Wilson working in Liverpool in that period). C1865 Liege Belgium “E. LEFAUCHEUX INVR. BREVETE”, Burnished Steel Framed 9mm Pin Fire Obsolete Calibre 6 Shot Double Action Revolver With Ornate Tooled Foliate Decoration & Antique Ivory Grips. Sn 17879 - 17879
An attractive 6 shot 9mm Lefaucheux double action pin fire revolver, made C1865 . It has a 2 stage 6” barrel. The breech is engraved with scrolls in panels and hunting dogs with game birds scenes. It is also stamped “E. LEFAUCHEUX INVR. BREVETE” & with Liege proofs. The frame numbered 256970. It has a captive ejector rod on the right, bag shaped antique ivory grips, and lanyard ring. The grips have fine, old stable cracks but are totally secure. The pistol’s rifled bore has staining and residue consistent with age and use. It has fluted cylinder, pinched triangular block fore sight and notched hammer rear sight. The pistol is side gate loading and is fully functioning in both single & double action.
