*British Pattern ‘1887 MKIII’ Sword Bayonet and Scabbard. BAYO 743. - BAYO 743 This is a very clean ‘1887’ pattern ‘MKIII’ bayonet, and is the version with no fullers to the blade. The blade carries a crown over ‘V.R. /88’ (1888) it was probably made at ‘Enfield, Wilkinson’ as other makers clearly stamped their blades. The other side of the blade carries a broad arrow over ‘W.D.’ and an inspection stamp. There are also two inspection stamps t the spine. The pommel carries the number ‘9830’. The grips are black leather secured by two rivets, and the blade measures 18 ¼ “. The scabbard is brass mounted black leather instead of the usual steel, and it is thought that these scabbards were used by Indian troops. The mouthpiece is stamped ‘C.H.’ Broad arrow over ‘I 00’. *WWI British ‘P13’ Mk1 Sword, Bayonet and Scabbard. BAYO 742. - BAYO 742 This is a great example of the ‘P13’ bayonet, which although designated ‘P13’, fit the ‘P14’ rifle and was not introduced until ‘1916’. It is marked to the blade with ‘1913’ over ‘5 17’ (May 1917) and ‘Remington’ in a circle. The other side of the blade carries British inspection stamps. The vast majority of these bayonets were made in America by ‘Remington and Winchester’ with only a few made in England by ‘Vickers’. The wooden grips have two grooves on either side to distinguish it from the ‘P1907’. The scabbard is a British ‘No1 MKII’ with a round frog stud, and the frog is a ‘1939’ leather version stamped to the rear with ‘Lees (W) Ltd 1940 F8;’ probably re-issued to the Homeguard in ‘WWII’. *German ‘G3’ Bayonet and Scabbard. BAYO 738. - BAYO 738 This is a ‘G3’ bayonet to fit the German ‘G3’ rifle. Based on the Spanish ‘CETME’ rifle and introduced in ‘1959’. It has undamaged ribbed plastic grips and a blade similar to the American ‘M3’ knife blade. The bayonet fixed to the rifle in an inverted position above the barrel and was secured by a plug which fitted into the gas port of the rifle. The original German issue scabbards also followed the American pattern of ‘M8 & M8A1’ types. As the popularity of the ‘G3’ rifle grew it was exported to over 60 countries, and our example is one of these export versions being in a black plastic scabbard with a fixed belt frog. *U.S. Model ‘1917’ Bayonet and Scabbard. BAYO 736. - BAYO 736 This is a nice clean ‘P1917’ bayonet made in ‘WWII’ for the ‘P17 30-06’ rifle. It can be differentiated from the ‘P13’ which it resembles by the markings on the blade. This example is marked to the blade with ‘1917’ over a ‘W’ ina circle, meaning manufacture by ‘Winchester’ and consequently a scarcer model, as ‘Winchester’ only made 500,000, compared to ‘Remington’ who made over 2 million. The other side of the blade carries the flaming grenade and eagles head over ‘U,S’. The grips are wooden *with age related marks* with two grooves cut across them which is where it resembles the ‘P13’ and was interchangeable with the ‘P13’ except for the ‘P17’ rifle being 30.06 instead of the British .303. The scabbard which is showing signs of use is the standard American ‘P17’ version with belt hooks attached. These bayonets were often issued to the Homeguard in ‘WWII’. U.S. ‘M1’ Garand Bayonet and Scabbard. BAYO 733. - BAYO 733 This a lovely dated blade ‘M1’ bayonet that has been cut down from an ‘M1905’ long bayonet, denoted by the fact that the tip. The blade is marked with ‘S.A.’ (Springfield Arsenal) over a flaming grenade and ‘1918’. The other side carries ‘U.S. over 856482’.This bayonet was converted by ‘A.F.H’ (Allied Fork & Hoe Co) and is stamped to the top of the hilt with ‘A.F.H’. The grips are black plastic held by a single screwbolt. The scabbard is an olive drab camouflaged early example with ‘U.S. M7’ stamped to the topmount and not the later flaming grenade with ‘U.S.’. *U.S. ‘M1 Garand’ Bayonet and Scabbard. BAYO 731. - BAYO 731 This is a nice ‘M1 Garand’ bayonet with an original blade and not a cut down ‘M1905’ or ‘M1942’. The fullers do not run through to the tip as with the cut down bayonets, but stop 2 ¾ “from the tip. It is marked to the blade with ‘R.I.A.’ (Rock Island Arsenal) a feint 1918 date and a flaming grenade with the other side carrying ‘U.S. over a feint 355805?’ The bayonet metal parts appear to have been chromed, possibly for ceremonial use. The unmarked grips are black ribbed plastic held by a single screwbolt. The near mint scabbard is an olive drab, again freshly made and not a cut down version. It is marked to the top mount with a flaming grenade and U.S. the rear of the scabbard carries ‘VP 29’ denoting manufacture by ‘Victory Plastics’ , see ‘An Illustrated History of Bayonets’ by Martin.J.Brayley, pages 231-241.
