French Model 1874 Type Bayonet and Scabbard. - BAYO 682 This is a very rare Gras Type Bayonet for an unknown rifle. To all intents and purpose it is an M1874 French Gras Bayonet, but this example does not have the French inscription on the blade spine and has a slightly wider grip and a straight backed hilt. Also the top of the muzzle ring has been ground off. Blade length 20 ½ “, total length including scabbard 25 ¾ “. Many theories exist but as several other countries use and modified the M1874 bayonet there seems to be no conclusive proof as to which rifle this example fitted. However, it is known that Portugal used a variant for their Portuguese Kropatschek navy rifle and this had a straight back hilt without the hump found on the other M1874’S. This actual specimen is illustrated in an article by Graham priest in classic Arms & Militaria magazine and is rare with only about 4 examples having been recorded. German S84/98 Bayonet and Scabbard. - BAYO 680 German S84/98 Bayonet and Scabbard. This is a wartime production bayonet and scabbard and is a third pattern with wood grips. It is marked to the blade with 42 cul which is the wartime code for WKC, Waffefabrik, Solingen Wald. This is repeated on the mouth of the scabbard. The other side of the blade carries 5940 and the pommel has two Waffenampt stamps. The scabbard is steel and has the numbers 963? Stamped to the top. The tip of the scabbard also carries a Waffenampt stamp. The bayonet has obviously seen action but is in good collectable condition for a wartime dated example. German M98 Dress Bayonet, Scabbard & Frog - BAYO 678 German M98 Dress Bayonet, Scabbard & Frog. This is a nice other ranks M98 Dress bayonet with the longer 9 ¾ “ blade. The shorter 7 ¾ “ blade was for the Non-commissioned officer (N.C.O). These were worn with the walking out dress uniform, much the same as officers wore dress daggers. This example was made by Alcoso and is marked to the blade with their trademark of Alcoso, Scales & Solingen. The grips are chequered black plastic and the pommel has a working press stud and rifle mortise but could not be fitted to a rifle as the slot was too small for the attachment lug on the M98 Mauser rifle. German late WW2 M88/89 3rd Model Bayonet & Scabbard. - BAYO 677 This is a late production K98 bayonet made in 1944 by E & F Horster and marked to the blade with their wartime code of 44asw. There is only one visible waffenampt stamp to the pommel and the overall finish is not up to the usual standard. The scabbard is also a late war version with the finish not being as good as normal. This is marked to the top with 44cof which is the wartime code for Carl Eickhorn. A nice late war combination and a must for the serious collector. Austrian M1895 Mannlicher Bayonet & Scabbard. - BAYO 676 This is a nice N.C.O’s (Non-commissioned officer) version of the M1895 Mannlicher bayonet made at Steyr. It is marked to the blade with OE over WG (Osterreichiche Waffenfabrik Gesellschaft Steyr) and the double headed eagle denoting use by the imperial forces and not for export. The blade is 9 ¾ “ in length nad has rounde fullers. The crossguard is secured by 2 rivets and has a hooked quillon. The grips are wood secured by domed rivets and the pommel has a hole which would have had a steel knot loop (now missing but easily replaced) The scabbard is steel with a brazed frog stud. German WW2 M88/98 3rd Model Bayonet & Scabbard. - BAYO 675 This is a nice 3rd model K98 bayonet with wood grips. Blade length 10”. Overall length 15”. It was made by Mundlos AG, Maedebure Nord and is marked to the blade with their wartime code of 5244G. The blade retains all of its original bluing. There are two Waffenampt stamps to the pommel. The scabbard is stamped with 42 cof which is the wartime code for Carl Eickhorn. A nice wartime combination by a lesser manufacturer. See White & Watts No 295 pages 115 & 132. £175.
