WW1 1918 Mesopotamia British Serviceman’s War Souvenir Brass Pocket Fob Watch By E.R Khazam Bagdad Engraved ‘Amara (British Military Medical Hub Iraq) April 1918 Mesopotamia’ With Chain & Key. Sn 23371 - 23371
Amara, Iraq, was a critical medical hub and logistical base for British forces in April 1918, serving as a primary hospital centre for the Mesopotamian Campaign of World War I. While the famous Siege of Kut-al-Amara had ended two years earlier in April 1916, Amara remained a vital occupied town where thousands of soldiers were stationed or treated. Although the major fighting had moved north toward Mosul, Amara was a frequent stop for units like the 13th (Western) Division and various Indian Army brigades as they rotated through the region. Many soldiers who died of disease or wounds in these hospitals during early 1918 are now commemorated at the Amara War Cemetery, which contains over 4,600 burials. This is an Iraq made pocket fob watch no doubt a war souvenir perhaps bought by a British Serviceman receiving medical treatment or serving as Medical staff at Amara in 1918. The fob watch has been serviced & is working but not guaranteed. The watch is just under 2 ¼” diameter with lids closed. Boxed Blank Firing 1950’s Webley .22 (6mm) Blank Calibre ‘Sports Starting Pistol’ With Original 6 Round Magazine, Cleaning Brush & Illustrated Instruction Leaflet. Sn 23380 - 23380
The Webley Starting Pistol is a vintage firearm that holds a significant place in the history of starting pistols. Produced by the esteemed British manufacturer Webley & Scott, it was first introduced in the early 20th century and quickly became a popular choice for sporting events. It features a sleek design with a sturdy construction, showcasing the craftsmanship and attention to detail for which Webley & Scott is renowned. The pistol’s frame is blued alloy and features brown undamaged chequered panel Webley signature plastic grips, providing both durability and aesthetic appeal. This starting pistol fires .22 (6mm) calibre blank cartridges, which produce a loud report and smoke when fired, creating a distinct signal for the commencement of races or other events. The reliability and loudness of the report made the Webley a preferred choice for many race officials and competitors. Although the Webley is primarily associated with sporting events, it also found its way into theatrical performances and historical re-enactments. Its realistic appearance and sound effects allowed it to effectively simulate the firing of a real firearm without the danger of live ammunition. This example dates from the 1950’s. Its loading & firing mechanisms work correctly. The metalwork is very good with only minor use related marks. The pistol comes with its original Webley labelled box, original illustrated instruction leaflet, 6 round magazine & wire cleaning brush. A nice collector’s item. The price includes UK delivery. Z18 Hans Lüdemann was one of six Type 1936 destroyers built for the Kriegsmarine (German Navy) in the late 1930s. Completed in 1938, the ship spent most of her time training. At the beginning of World War II in September 1939, she was initially deployed to lay minefields off the German coast, but was soon transferred to the Skagerrak where she inspected neutral shipping for contraband goods. In late 1939, Z18 Hans Lüdemann helped to lay two offensive minefields off the English coast that claimed one destroyer and twenty merchant ships. Z18 Hans Lüdemann was named after Engineer-Midshipman Hans Lüdemann who saved the lives of the remaining men in the engine room in the torpedo boat S-13 after the high-pressure cylinder exploded on 14 May 1913. The Hans Lüdemann was allocated to Group 1 for the Norwegian portion of Operation Weserübung in April 1940. During the battle of Narvik the ship received battle damage from British Royal Navy destroyers resulting in the ship being beached, abandoned by the crew and eventually torpedoed & destroyed by the Royal Navy (a copy of an original black & white photograph of the destroyer taken in 1939 is illustrated in image 1). These flags were signed by family members, friends & Colleagues of Japanese Soldiers and presented to them before leaving for war. It is made of white cotton and has a central vivid red painted roundel surrounded many Japanese kanji signatures. Many of the kanji overlap and are illegible, We have been able to roughly translate some in image 2 as follows: Main Dedication: “Eternal good fortune in battle” / “May your military luck last long.”: Top left: Certain victory: Praying for your military fortune: Kojima (a surname): Yoshida (surname): Kawahara (surname): Nakamura (surname). Large vertical writing (right side) & Bottom-left vertical strip, names include: Sato: Yamaguchi: Watanabe: Yokoyama, many additional signatures appear but are too stylized for reliable translation. Bottom under sun: Praying for your good fight / brave effort: Prayer for certain victory: Advance bravely: Praying for your military fortune. Dozens more appear on the flag, but the handwriting varies significantly and is illegible. There is also a faint red ink stamp which is illustrated in image 1 most likely a maker or military stamp. The flag has some staining consistent with age to be expected. 2 corners of the flag have their original stitched leather tabs with original hanging cords. The flag has no holes or mothing.
