C1854-1860’s British London Made Brunswick Pattern Volunteer / Militia .577 Calibre Muzzle Loading Percussion Rifle With Patchbox. Sn 21593 - 21593
The Brunswick rifle was a large calibre muzzle-loading percussion rifle manufactured for the British Army by Enfield in the early 19th century. The Brunswick rifle was one of several designs submitted to replace the Baker rifle. Unlike the Baker rifle, the Brunswick rifle used a special round ball with raised ribs that fit into two spiralling grooves in the barrel. The rifle was designed to accept a sword type bayonet which mounted by use of a bayonet bar, similar to the design of that used on the Baker rifle. The bayonet bar was relocated further back due to problems that had been experienced with the Baker rifle. The Brunswick rifle used a block front sight and a two position folding leaf rear sight which although ungraduated were set for either 200 or 300 yards. In 1854 as a result of introduction of the Minie rifle musket, Brunswicks were issued to militia Regiments and remained in service with them into the 1860’s (see page 64 plate 58 and page 65 of British Military Longarms by Bailey). This is a Brunswick type Volunteer / Militia rifle. The usual calibre of a Brunswick rifle is .704 calibre our variant is .577 calibre. The action plate is stamped ‘London’. It has all original woodwork with brass butt plate, trigger guard, fore end block, ram rod mounts and Brunswick type patch box with hinged lid which has the correct 2 compartments, original steel ramrod & Brunswick pattern bayonet bar with notch. It has a block & blade fore sight and Brunswick type leaf rear sights. The wood has knocks bumps and bruises consistent with age and service use. The wood is impressed with what looks like number ‘8’ or reverse letter ‘B’ above ‘25’. The plain steel barrel has no visible external proofs and measures 30” in length. The rifle measures 46 ¼” overall. The rifled bore has staining and residue consistent with age & service use. The cocking and firing actions work crisply. The price includes UK delivery. Tower, Enfield Indian Pattern 1858 Percussion Musket. Sn - 21977:8
This is nice Jaipur Arsenal marked Tower, Enfield Pattern 1858 Indian percussion musket. This was the first pattern smoothbore Indian pattern musket after the mutiny. These muskets were made for the Indian army after the Indian Mutiny where Indian soldiers were only given smooth bore weapons. The musket has a barrel length of 39 inches with an overall length of 54 inches. The lockplate is stamped TOWER with the Queens crown and 1860. The barrel is retained by 3 Baddley bands and has a nice smooth finish. The musket is fitted with a v notch rear sight, a Enfield type blade foresight, sling swivels and a leather sling. The barrel has Jaipur Arsenal marks stamped to the right hand side JPR/EXR/2119 and has a brass chained nipple protector. The musket has a smooth bore with a diameter of .606 inches and has staining and residue due to age and service. The musket has a walnut stock with nice smooth woodwork with minor bumps and bruises due to service life and is stamped on the right hand side with a roundel and 7 with two dashes under it. The musket has brass furniture with the correct brass riveted on fore end cap. This is an excellent .577 Snider 2 band rifle. The action plate is stamped with 1877 date and Crown. It has all original wood work in excellent condition. It has regulation brass fittings. It has its original bayonet bar, sling swivels, iron cleaning rod, ladder rear sight and block with blade fore sight. The barrel’s bore is clean with well defined rifling. This is a British Volunteer Officer’s Privately Commissioned Snider conversion 3 Band .577 Obsolete Calibre 3 Band Snider Patent Rifle. The action plate is stamped by the manufacturer ‘LSA Co’ (London Small Arms Company) dated 1871 and has the company’s combined ‘LSAC’ trademark. It has all original wood work in very good condition. It has none regulation brass fittings. It has sling swivels fitted with leather sling, iron cleaning rod, ladder rear sight and block with blade fore sight. The barrel’s bore has just light staining consistent with age and has well defined rifling. The barrel and action have proof / inspection marks. The Total length is 55” with a 36” barrel. The breech has the correct hinged cover with knurled locking catch. The breech is marked with faint ‘Sniders Patent’ mark. The barrel tang and trigger guard have foliate engraved decoration. **THE BEST WE HAVE OWNED**LARGE**HEAVY**ORNATE**Original, 19th Century Oriental Cast Bronze Lantaka Merchant Ships Deck Pirate Defence Cannon / Swivel Gun With Later Wooden Display Stand. Sn 21979 - 21979
Lantaka were a type of bronze cannon mounted on merchant vessels travelling the waterways of Malay Archipelago in the 1800’s. Their use was greatest in precolonial South East Asia especially in Malaysia, the Philippines, and Indonesia. The guns were used to defend against pirates. Many of these beautiful guns were mounted on swivels and were known as swivel guns. The smaller ones could be mounted almost anywhere including in the rigging. This is an excellent original large 19th Century blackened cast bronze Lantaka swivel cannon of the size & weight used on deck and is the most attractive one we have owned. It is a large 3 feet 5 ¼” in length and has a 1 ¼” muzzle diameter bore. It has the correct large bronze mounting spike with ornate cast curved arms secured to the barrel by lugs either side of the barrel. The barrel is ornately decorated with foliate and geometric designs and it has a flared ornate muzzle. The barrel has flamboyant cast ‘sea serpents’ in the mid section and muzzle not only for decoration but also used for sighting. The barrel is open and it has its original open touch hole. The rear of the barrel has a hollow tubular handle for aiming. The Lantaka is complete with a purpose made later wood stand, holed to accept the Lantaka’s spike. The Lantaka is very heavy weighing over 25 Kg on its own (it maxed out our 25Kg Maximum scales). The price for this historic Lantaka with stand which would make a superb display / conversation piece and delivery is by arrangement and at cost. N.B. This is a Mark III British WD breech loading snider rifle converted from muzzle loading 1853 pattern rifle. The action plate is stamped by the manufacturer ‘Enfield’ dated 1860 and inspection marks together with Crown VR (Victoria Regina). It has all original wood work in excellent condition. It has the correct steel fittings. It has bayonet bar, sling swivels fitted with leather sling, iron cleaning rod, ladder rear sight and block with blade fore sight. This is an original Crimean War dated British Pattern 1853 Infantry rifle. It has a 39” barrel and measures 55” overall. The barrel’s bore has heavy residue consistent with age and service use. It has its original undamaged walnut stock and regulation brass fittings. It has a heavy military hammer, block & blade fore sight & ordnance marked adjustable ladder rear sight. The action plate is marked with Queen’s Crown VR (Victoria Regina), ‘Tower’ (Enfield) and ‘1856’ date. The barrel has proofs. The rifle has sling swivels fitted with leather sling and iron ramrod. The rifle has a strong cocking and firing action. The rifle is accompanied by an original period British P1853 socket bayonet. The bayonet has a 17” triangular blade. It has the correct swivel locking catch at the socket. The bayonet has staining consistent with age but no rust. The blade has inspection marks and partially visible maker name ‘F. Preston Manchester’. The bayonet has its original brass mounted leather scabbard. The leather and stitching are intact. India Pattern Brown Bess muskets were the standard British Infantry Musket between 1797 & 1854. Some were in use pre-1797 purchased from the East India Company for use in Egypt (see 32-35 of British Military Long Arms 1715-1815 by Bailey where India pattern muskets are described & illustrated). This is a very good, original, India Pattern Tower Brown Bess flintlock musket. It has a 37 ¼” barrel (52 ¼” overall) with block foresight. The barrel’s smooth bore has staining and residue consistent with age and service use. Its lock plate is marked with a crown and the letters GR (King George Rex) & ordnance mark together with ‘Tower’ across the tail of lock. The musket has standard British India pattern brass fittings including butt plate, trigger guard with extended tang, fore end cap & brass ramrod pipes. It has a military hammer Walnut full stock with iron ramrod as illustrated in the pages of Bailey’s book. The musket’s cocking and firing actions work crisply. The wood is Regiment marked ‘S.L.M’. The ‘M’ is poorly impressed and resembles a letter ‘K’. We cannot find a Regiment with initials ‘SLK’ so it is more likely to be ‘SLM’ to the South Lancashire Militia (the Lancashire Militia originated in 1689 when King William III directed the Earl of Derby, Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire, to call out and train the Militia under Charles II’s Act of 1662 which formed the basis for Militia law until 1908). The Musket comes complete with an original period socket bayonet. The 17” triangular form blade is straight and has just staining and aged patina. The blade has no visible inspection or maker marks. The bayonet fits the musket. The price for this historic piece includes UK delivery. **MASSIVE**ORNATE**C1790 Indian North West Frontier Match Lock 22 Bore Musket Wrapped With Mother Of Pearl Plates & Ram Rod. A 1120 / 21897 - A 1120 / 21897
The matchlock was the first mechanism, or "lock" invented to facilitate the firing of a hand-held firearm. This design removed the need to lower by hand a lit match into the weapon's flash pan and made it possible to have both hands free to keep a firm grip on the weapon at the moment of firing and more importantly, to keep both eyes on the target. These weapons were prized by Native Warriors, and heavily personalised with ornate decoration. This is a C1790 Indian matchlock musket as used against British troops on the North West Frontier. It has a 45 ¼” long barrel with flared muzzle (approx. 22 bore) and measures a massive 5’ 5 ¼” overall length. The barrel has a ‘v’ notch block rear sight. The bore has typical heavy residue and staining consistent with age & use. It has a wood stock fully wrapped with hand crafted plates of Mother Of Pearl. The barrel has white metal wire barrel bands and typical wood block butt. It has a metal bar press trigger on the underside of the stock which correctly moves the 'match holder' arm to the metal powder pan and it has its iron ram rod. The metal has even patina to be expected of a native Indian weapon of its age. The barrel is numbered ‘96’ and the underside of the stock has later hand applied ink numbers ‘1016’ most likely an armoury number.
