**NAPOLEONIC WAR ERA**Famous Zeeland Family Of Dutch Naval Heroes Connections** C1815 Liege Belgium / Dutch Sea Service .650 Calibre Flintlock Belt Pistol With Brass Fittings Engraved To Dutch War Ship ‘Admiraal Evertsen Vlissingen’. Sn 23048 - 23048 The country we know as Belgium, with the city of Liege, famous for its centuries of arms manufacture, was not yet independent at the time this pistol was made. It was part of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands until 1839. That period in history was dominated by Napoleon’s wars of conquest and the Kingdom of the Netherlands was a part of the French Empire from 1795 to 1813. Under Napoleon’s rule it was renamed the Batavian Republic and then the Kingdom of Holland. During this time, the Dutch fought alongside the French. After Napoleon was defeated in 1813, William I was restored to head the government, and declared himself king in 1815 when Napoleon returned from Elba. His son, the future King William II, known as “Slender Billy” to the English, fought with Wellington at Waterloo against Napoleon. Liege pistols, although not the fine quality of the British versions were robust, heavy and well made, the short supply of British Sea Service pistols led to the British and other allied nations purchasing Liege variants to supplement their arsenals. Our Liege / Dutch Sea service pistol is in very good as found, un-messed with condition and has connections to the Evertsens, a prominent Dutch naval family from Zeeland, many of whom were admirals and naval heroes. It measures 15 ½” overall with a 9” round steel barrel. The smooth bore has light staining & residue consistent with age & service use. The top of the barrel is engraved ‘Admiraal Evertsen Vlissingen’ / Admiral Evertsen Vlissingen (the Dutch name for a city, which was historically known as Flushing in English). The inscription most likely relates to the name of Dutch warship several of which were named after the Evertsen family, possibly, the ship Admiraal Evertsen which was a Dutch ship-of-the-line launched in 1808. While Vlissingen (Flushing) was a significant Dutch naval port and home to the Admiralty of Zeeland, the specific operations of this particular ship were primarily in the Dutch East Indies (modern-day Indonesia) in the immediate aftermath of the Napoleonic wars). The barrel, lock plate and brass trigger guard have inspection marks including ‘W’ marks (most likely Dutch Wilhem II) and the steel belt bar has Naval anchor inspection mark. The brass butt cap with steel lanyard ring has engraved Ship’s armoury weapon number ‘14’ (illustrated). It has a heavy military cock. The heavy all original walnut full stock has brass furniture. The pistol is correctly without facility for ram rod as these pistols were belt carried. The metalwork has nice even patina throughout. The cocking and firing actions work crisply. **EXTREMELY RARE**QUALITY**C1840 English Conway (Manchester Or Stockport Cheshire) Beever’s Oval / Elliptical Bore 1825 Patent, 10 / 18 Bore, Double Barrel Side By Side Percussion Sporting Shotgun With Damascus Steel Barrels. Sn 23007 - 23007 An Extremely rare Beever's 1825 Patent oval or elliptical bore percussion double-barrelled shotgun by Conway (either Thomas Conway, an English Gunsmith with premises in Manchester at 179 Chapel Street, 3 Market Street & 43 Blackfriars Street, Deansgate between 1803-1852 or Samuel Conway, an English Cheshire based Gunsmith. In 1840 he is recorded as having premises at 4 Middle Hillgate Stockport. See page 196 of Brown’s book British Gunmakers Vol 2). See page 70 Abridgments of the Patent Specifications relating to Firearms and other Weapons Ammunition & Accoutrements 1588-1858 for the December 3rd 1825 patent of this gun, No.5305 which reads “BEEVER, John. — An improved gun-barrel. The barrel is made of an oval, elliptical, or other similar form, in order to give a more effective range to the charge of shot. The barrel is heated and put “upon a mandril of the required form,” and by preference an oval prism having the conjugate equal to two-thirds of the transverse diameter. The barrel is beaten upon the mandril into the required form” (a copy of the entry is illustrated in the images). The quality made gun has 28” Damascus steel barrels 10 bore if measured horizontally or 18 bore if measured vertically, designed to produce a fan of shot ideal for shooting rabbits. The gun measures 44” overall length. The barrel’s bores have just light staining consistent with age & use. The barrels, set side by side, have a central flat top barrel rib with bead fore sight. The underside of each barrel beneath the wood have English black powder proofs. It has a gold washed 'Beevers Patent' inlaid cartouche at the breech. It's original walnut stock with chequered panels at the fore stock and wrist is excellent. It has a steel butt plate with extended tang and the top of the wrist is inlaid with a void Silver escutcheon. The fore stock also has Silver fittings. The metal work has nice foliage engraving to the, breach tang, Dolphin hammers, butt plate tang and steel trigger guard with extended tang and Pineapple finial. The action plates are both engraved by the manufacturer 'Conway' & with rabbits and acanthus leaves. The right side of the stock has a purpose designed notch near to the edge of the action plate for insertion of a tool to lever off the plate for inspection or repair. It has double triggers and the weapon cocks & dry fires crisply. The shotgun has it's original ebonised wood ram rod with oval cap and screw off tip which reveals a steel worm. **QUALITY**1785-1819 Cased Pair Of English Ketland & Co London Brass Action & Barrels 50 Bore Tap Action Double Barrel Flintlock Pistols With English Proofs, Turn Off Barrels & Original Accessories. Sn 22967:3 - 22967:3 Ketland & Co were English gunsmith's based at various addresses in Birmingham & London between 1785-1819. This is a nice pair of Tap action flintlock pistols made by Ketland & Co. Their round brass screw off barrels are 2 ¼” in length (7 ¾” overall). The smooth bores have staining and residue consistent with age and use. The underside of the pistol’s brass frames have English black powder proofs. Their heavy brass frames are nicely signed on one side ‘Ketland & Co’, the revrse ‘London’. The trigger guards are blued steel. They each have steel slide safety bolts, steel pans and cocks fitted with flints. The pistol's bag shaped walnut grips are undamaged and the back of each grip are inlaid with void white metal shield escutcheons. The pistols cock and dry fire with strong spring actions and the tap actions operated by a rounded lever on the left side of their pans function correctly. The pistols are complete with their fitted wood case. The case with hinged lid has an inlaid void brass shield device on top of the lid. The case measures 10 ¾” x 8 ¼” x 2”. The case has a brass lock (key absent) and 2 hook fasteners. The inside of the case is lined with green felt & contoured to snugly fit the pistols and their accessories which consist of a small quantity of moulded lead balls, a spare flint, a pistol size brass & copper powder flask with sprung nozzle & a steel bullet mould. **RARE**American Revolutionary War & Napoleonic Wars Era**French St Etienne Arsenal Model 1777 Cavalry Officer’s Brass Action Flintlock .650 Carbine Calibre Holster Pistol With Ram Rod. Sn 22929 - 22929 The Model 1777 pistol was designed in the late 1770s, and it was manufactured until 1792 in three French cities: Saint-Etienne, Charleville, and Maubeuge. Between the period of 1788 to 1792, it is estimated that approximately 145,000 were fabricated. The Model 1777 also served as the design for the United States Model 1799, the first official model of firearm adopted in the States. The predecessor to the North & Cheney 1799 pistol, many French 1777 pistols came over from Europe during the American Revolutionary War, both with French troops and as part of the military aid supplied to the Revolution. These firearms saw extensive use during the Revolutionary Wars in the U.S. and the Napoleonic Peninsula campaigns in Europe from approximately 1808 to 1815. This heavy-calibre flintlock pistol was favoured by various military personnel, including infantry, naval personnel, and cavalry. This is a rare to find, original French Model 1777 Flintlock pistol. The pistol has its all original Walnut stock with correct brass action. The action is signed ‘St Etienne’ (Arsenal) and has ‘L’ inspection mark. It has a heavy military cock fitted with flint. SOLD SOLD (19/09) **RARE**ORIGINAL**Victorian Era Zulu Chieftain’s Quality Assegai Short Stabbing Spear With Sections Of Intricate Wire Binding & Brass Studs. Sn 22868 - 22868 The Assegai is a short handled stabbing spear invented by the legendary Zulu king Shaka in the early 1800s. The weapon revolutionized tribal warfare in South Africa. Chieftains would also use their Assegai to direct the attack of Zulu warrior Impi battle formations. A period photograph of a Zulu Chieftain armed with an Assegai in fighting stance is illustrated in image 1. This Assegai measures 44 ½” overall length. It has a blackened iron 9” long leaf shaped blade. The blade is 1 ½” wide at its broadest. Its tang is attached to its hand crafted wood shaft by intricate bound wire. There are also a 5 sections of matching binding along the length of the wood shaft. The sections of wire binding are surrounded by round head brass stud nails (a few studs have been lost over its lifetime). The studs are not merely decoration but also assist grip during battle and would reflect light making it highly visible to warriors when being used to direct Impi movement. **SCARCE**ORIGINAL**Victorian Era Zulu Warrior’s Assegai Short Stabbing Spear With Intricate Bi-Colour Wire Binding. Sn 22867 - 22867 The Assegai is a short handled stabbing spear invented by the legendary Zulu king Shaka in the early 1800s. The weapon revolutionized tribal warfare in South Africa. A period photograph of a Zulu warrior armed with an Assegai is illustrated in image 1. This Assegai measures 4 Feet 2 Inches overall length. It has a blackened iron 8” long leaf shaped blade. The blade is 1 ¼” wide at its broadest. Its tang is securely attached to its hand crafted wood shaft by intricate tightly bound bi-colour wire (frayed with age along the bottom edge). There is also a small section of matching binding on the lower section of the shaft. **QUALITY**MINT RIFLED BORES**C1780 Cased, Pair Of English John Twigg & John Bass London .577 Regulation Calibre Cavalry Officer’s Private Purchase Carbine Flintlock Pistols Retailed In France By Pirmet Paris & Period Converted To Percussion &accessories - 22967:2 John Bass was a London based gunsmith. He worked between 1761 & 1794 at his workshop located at 19 Green Park Row, Piccadilly, London and was in partnership for a while with the renowned English Gunsmith John Twigg. Bass partnered with his father-in-law John Twigg, himself considered one of the most talented gun makers of the era, to form Twigg & Bass in the 1780s and continued to work under his own name after Twigg's death circa 1790. Twigg & Bass are known to have produced high end flintlock pistols including pocket, coach, and duelling pistols. This is an excellent pair of percussion Carbine pistols by Twigg & Bass made C1780 retailed in France By Pirmet Paris (most likely François Pirmet recorded in Paris 1779–1818) and later period converted to percussion. These convertible Carbine pistols were popular private purchase weapons favoured by Cavalry Officers. They would originally have been issued with removable shoulder stocks so they could be used as either holster pistols or carbines carried in saddle buckets. Originally the pistols would have been supplied in a larger case to accommodate each pistols shoulder stock. These carbine pistols are without their shoulder stocks and are contained in a period fitted case, possibly when period converted to percussion and has all original accessories. The pistols have all original walnut full stocks with chequered grip panels and carved butts. The back of each grip is slotted for shoulder stock attachment. They have 9” sighted octagonal Damascus steel barrels (14 ½” overall). They have blued foliate decorated trigger guards with extended tangs and pineapple finials & Dolphin hammers. The action plates of each pistol are signed ‘Twigg & Bass’. The top of each barrel are signed ‘Twigg & Bass London’. One barrel flat of each pistol is signed ‘Carabine Par’ (Carbine By) and another of each pistol ‘Pirmet A Paris’. Each barrel has crisp English black powder proofs. Both pistols are complete with their original wood ram rods with steel tips and end caps. The rifled bores of each barrel are near mint clean & bright with well defined rifling. Their cocking & firing actions and safety bolts work crisply. The pistols are complete with their fitted wood case. The case with hinged lid has its original lock with key that locks the case correctly, folding brass carry handle and brass hook fasteners. The interior of the case is lined in felt and has compartments contoured to snugly fit the pistols and their accessories which include a copper and brass powder flask, a steel WD (War Dept) marked bullet mould, a wood cleaning rod with brass tip, a wood handled tool and Joyce & Co London labelled percussion cap tin which contains a quantity of percussion caps. SOLD SOLD (CJ) French Flintlock Mle 1822 Muzzle Loading Rifled Musket. Sn - 22861 The French Mle 1822 musket was the last smoothbore musket used by the French Army. In later life, when rifling came into use, many of the smoothbore m 1822 muskets were rifled with 4 groove rifling cut into the bore. Much later on in service life, these guns were converted to the percussion system. This is an original flintlock French Mle 1822 smoothbore musket converted to a rifled barrel by rifling the existing barrel. The rifle has a 42 ½ inch barrel with an overall length of 58 inches. The iron lock plate is fitted with a continental style ring neck cock and carries feint arsenal engraving. The rifle is only fitted with a foresight, no rear sight being modified to fit the gun. The rifle has steel furniture with 3 iron driving bands, original iron ramrod and both sling swivels. The bore of the barrel has good 4 groove rifling with the normal staining and residue from use. The left hand side of the tang is stamped C&S and the under side of the breech carries proof marks and stampings. The stock is in good condition with the normal minor knocks and bumps from service use. The left hand side of the butt has the correct cutout for the riflemans cheek when firing the rifle. C1830 English Jabez Bloxham Welch Banbury Nipple & Drum Percussion Converted from Flintlock Coaching Blunderbuss With Integral Folding Bayonet & Ram Rod. Sn 22697:1 - 22697:1 Jabez Bloxham Welch was an English gunmaker recorded as working in the market town, Banbury on the River Cherwell in Oxfordshire between 1829 & 1852 (see page 105 of English Gunmakers by Bailey & Nie). We can find no other gunmakers named Welch working in the flintlock / percussion era in Banbury. This is an excellent Blunderbuss no doubt by Jabez Bloxham Welch and is of the type favoured by Coach drivers for self protection against Highwaymen. It is 28 ½” overall (bayonet closed) with a 12 ½” round steel barrel which is a large 1 ¼” width at the muzzle opening. The smooth bore has just light staining consistent with age & use. The underside of the barrel beneath the wood has initials ‘E.B’ most likely Welch’s barrel maker. The top of the barrel has English black powder proofs and is signed ‘Banbury’. The blunderbuss, originally a flintlock was period nipple & drum converted to percussion. It has a Dolphin hammer & steel lock plate which has foliate engraved decoration and is signed by the maker ‘Welch’. The action also has part of a sliding safety bolt probably from when it was a flintlock. The safety slides but does not lock the percussion hammer to safety. It has all original Walnut full stock with chequered wrist panels and steel mounts. The top of the wrist is inlaid with void brass shield escutcheon. The wood has just light age and handling related bumps and bruises. The trigger guard with extended tang and finial & butt plate tang have light foliate engraved decoration. a sliding safety bolt that works as it should. It has an ebonised wood ramrod with brass end cap and tip which unscrews to reveal a steel worm. The blunderbuss has its original integral folding bayonet mounted on top of the barrel which is retained by a spring clip at the muzzle end & sliding catch at the breech. The spring clips works correctly and the 9 ½” fullered triangular shaped blade tapers to a pin sharp point. The weapon cocks and dry fires crisply. French Model 1822 St Etienne Arsenal .700 Calibre Muzzle Loading Dragoon Cavalry Percussion Pistol With Regulation Brass Fittings & Iron Ram Rod. Sn 22915 - 22915 An original French Model 1822 Arsenal Dragoon Cavalry pistol. Many of these pistols were carried by Confederate troops in the American Civil war supplied by their French allies. This French Dragoon pistol has a Walnut Stock with regulation brass fittings. The all original stock has bumps & bruises to be expected with age and use.
