**NAPOLEONIC WARS ERA**Georgian British Cavalry 1799 Pattern Durs Egg London .650 Carbine Calibre Flintlock Light Dragoon Pistol With Regulation Brass Fittings. A 1103 - A 1103
Durs Egg (1748–1831) was a Swiss-born British gunmaker, noted for his quality pistols and for his company's production of the Ferguson rifle. Egg was apprenticed in Solothurn and Paris before establishing his own business in London in 1772. He was a contemporary of Joseph Manton, Jean Samuel Pauly and the uncle of Joseph Egg. When the famous gunsmith Durs Egg died in 1831 his Son John Egg took over the business operating at Haymarket London. In 1839 The business name reverted to Durs Egg at 4 Pall Mall London until 1854 then at 4 Colonnade Pall Mall from 1855 to 1865.This is an original British 1799 Pattern Durs Egg London .650 Carbine Calibre Flintlock Light Dragoon Pistol by Durs Egg. The pistol has all original wood work with regulation brass fittings, including trigger guard with extended tang, fore end block & cudgel butt. The walnut full stock has just light bumps and bruises to be expected. One side of the stock at the muzzle has a fine, small crack which is stable and only visible on close inspection. It has a heavy military cock fitted with flint & wood ram rod. It measures 15 ½” overall with a 9” round steel barrel. The top of the barrel is signed by the maker ‘D. Egg London N26’. The smooth bore has just light staining consistent with age and use. The barrel has crisp proofs. The action works crisply. The lock plate is signed ‘D. Egg’ & has Georgian King’s Crown & Royal Cypher ‘GR’ (George Rex) indicating military issue. The price includes UK delivery. 1841-1869 English Henry Or William Cartwright Of Norwich Norfolk, Rotary Underlever Double Damascus Barrelled Breech Loading 12 Bore Pinfire Obsolete Calibre Sporting Shotgun. Sn 22621 - 22621
Henry Cartwright was an English Norwich Norfolk based gunmaker recorded as working between 1841 & 1858. There was also a William Cartwright working in the same area between 1863 & 1869 (see page 93 of English Gunmakers by Baily & Nie). This is a double barrel sporting pinfire shotgun by either Henry or William Cartwright of Norwich. It has 29 ¼” smooth bore barrels with flat top barrel rib. The barrel’s bores are clean. The barrel rib and both action plates are signed by the maker ‘Cartwright Norwich’. The weapon has a brass bead fore sight. The action has quality deep cut scrolling foliate engraved decoration all around. It has double hammers and double triggers. The shotgun’s cocking and firing actions work crisply. The shotgun’s stock has chequered panels at the wrist and fore stock. It has a steel Trigger guard with extended tang numbered ‘313’ & Pineapple finial & ribbed butt with top and bottom steel heel plates. **FAMOUS JOSEPH MANTON CONNECTIONS**1847-1869 English James Or William Rowntree Penrith (Cumberland) 16 Bore Muzzle Loading Percussion Shotgun With Grip Safety & Double Damascus Steel Barrels By The Famous Joseph Manton Davies Street London. Sn 22576 - 22576
James Rowntree was an English Penrith Cumberland based gunmaker with premises at Middlegate between 1847-69. William Rowntree was an English gunmaker recording as working in Penrith in 1857 (see page 323 of British Gunmakers Vol 2 By Brown). The prestigious English gunmaker Joseph Manton first established his own business in 1789 in Davies Street (no number given but probably 24 or 25 Davies Street) where he made sporting guns, This is an antique 16 Bore double barrel muzzle loading percussion shotgun made by either James or William Rowntree at their Penrith premises with barrels made by the famous gunmaker Joseph Manton at his Davies Steet premises. It has all original Walnut furniture with finely chequered wrist. The shotgun with double 28 ½” quality Damascus steel barrels, has double hammers & triggers. It measures 45” overall. The barrel rib has a bead fore sight and is crisply signed by the maker ‘Joseph Manton Davies Street Berkeley Square London’. The breech has border and scroll engraved back action locks and scroll engraved steel mounts. The lock plates are signed by the maker ‘Rowntree Penrith’. The underside of the shoulder stock is inlaid with void white metal escutcheon. On the underside of the stock behind the trigger guard is a grip safety which works as it should. The cocking & firing actions of the weapon work crisply. The barrel’s smooth bores have light staining consistent with age and use. Henry Tatham junior (1804-1860) was a London gunsmith with premises at 24 Pall Mall 1825-34, 37 Charing Cross 1834 56, 37 Charing Cross & 3 Opera Arcade 1857-58 & 37 Charing Cross only 1859-1860 (see page 207 of British Gunmakers Vol 1 London By Brown). This is an antique 13 Bore double barrel muzzle loading percussion shotgun made by Henry Tatham Junior at his 37 Charing Cross premises. It has all original Walnut furniture with finely chequered wrist. The shotgun with double 29 ½” Damascus steel barrels, has double hammers & triggers. It measures 45 ¾” overall. The barrel rib has a bead fore sight and is faintly signed ‘Henry Tatham Jr Charing Cross London’. The breech has platinum vent plugs, border and scroll engraved maker signed locks and scroll engraved steel mounts. The trigger guard is engraved with a depiction of a hunting dog in the field. The top of the action has inlaid gold pair of woodcocks in the field. The top of the wrist is inlaid with void brass escutcheon. The cocking & firing actions of the weapon work crisply. Charles Moore was a London gunsmith with premises at 2 Regent Circus 1821-23, 34 Regent st Waterloo place 1823-25 and 77 St James’s Street 1825-42. In the 1830’s he opened premises in France, the company later became Charles Moore & James Woodward in the 1840’s , C1948 the famous James Purdey & Sons succeeded to the business (see page 186 of British Gunmakers Vol 1 London By Brown). This is an antique 12 Bore double barrel muzzle loading percussion shotgun made Charles Moore at his 77 St James Street premises. It has all original Walnut furniture with finely chequered wrist. The shotgun with double 31 ½” browned Damascus steel barrels, has double hammers & triggers. It measures 47 ½” overall. The barrel rib has a bead fore sight and is faintly signed ‘C. Moore 77 St James Street London’. The breech has platinum vent plugs, border and scroll engraved signed floating locks and scroll engraved steel mounts. This is a 6 shot 7mm pin fire revolver made in Liege C1870. It measures 6 ¾” overall with a 2 ¾” two stage barrel. The barrel’s smooth bore is clean. The metal work in the white is undamaged. It has a fluted cylinder & typical folding trigger. Its original walnut grip is undamaged. The pistol is stamped with Liege ‘crown L’ & ‘ELG roundel’ marks. The pistol is side gate loading & has its original screw out ejector rod in the butt of the grip frame. The pistol’s double and single action firing mechanism works correctly. The pistol is accompanied by its original leather covered wood pistol shaped clamshell type hard case with clasp fastener. The case is lined and padded with rich purple material. The liner has just wear to be expected & the leather has some light scuffing to be expected. The case fits the pistol perfectly. The price includes UK delivery. This is a Presentation Enfield Sergeants Pattern 1860, 2 band percussion rifle made and presented by Thomas Turner of Fisher Street, Birmingham to Corporal H.Jarvis, the best shot of number 1 & 2 Companies of the Somersetshire Rifle Volunteers 1860. The rifle is fitted with 5 groove rifling and has a near mint bore with good rifling and some minor staining. The rifle is fitted with the correct iron furniture and the iron patchbox is engraved PRESENTED BY THOMAS TURNER FISHER ST BIRMINGHAM TO CORPl H.JARVIS THR BEST SHOT OF NO 1 & 2 COPANIES OF THE SOMERSETSHIRE RIFLE VOLUNTEERS 1860. The finely figured walnut stock is in excellent condition. The rifle is complete with its iron 1100 yard range ladder rear sight, block and blade fore sight, front and tang sling swivels, correct barrel bands and cleaning rod. The rifle measures 49 inches in length with a 32 ½ inch barrel. The rifles cocking & firing actions work crisply. The famous W.W. (William Wellington) Greener English sporting shotgun and rifle manufacturer was established in 1829 and is still in business, with a fifth generation Greener serving on its board of directors. He produced weapons under the names W. Greener & W.W. Greener. In the mid 1800’s Greener was producing firearms at the St Mary’s Works Birmingham and had Royal appointments with the British Monarchy. This is an excellent Percussion Rifle in .577" regulation calibre no doubt a volunteer Officer’s private purchase weapon by W. Greener. The 2 band rifle has a bayonet lug, sling swivels & steel ramrod, folding ladder sight, block & blade fore sight, platinum breech plug and quality scrollwork engraving to the hammer action bearing the maker's name, butt plate with extended tang and trigger guard with extended tang & acanthus bud finial. The full length stock has chequered grip panels & is fitted with scrollwork engraved patchbox hinged lid. The wood is inlaid with silver shield engraved to ‘J. Smith’ no doubt the Officer who commissioned this rifle. The 32” barrel has a near mint bore clean and bright with well defined 5 groove rifling. The rifle is 49” overall length. Hamburger & Co are recorded as London Gunmakers working at 30 Kings Street Covent Garden between 1812 & 1826, the company then became Hamburger Harwood & Co between 1827 & 1839 then Hamburger Rogers & Co between 1840 & 1917 (see page 165 of British Gunmakers Vol 1 by Brown). This percussion pistol by Hamburger & Co was most likely a Yeomanry Officer’s private purchase piece is in very good condition. It is 14” overall length with an 8” brown wash octagonal steel smooth bore sighted barrel. The barrel’s bore is clean. The all original walnut stock has just the bumps and bruises to be expected with age, chequered grip panels & inlaid void white metal disc. The blued metal work is clean and the trigger guard has an extended tang with Acanthus bud finial. The lock plate is crisply engraved 'Hamburger & Co’ and the top barrel flat ‘London'. The name is repeated on the top barrel flat. The action with sliding safety bolt functions as it should and the barrel at the breech has inlaid platinum lines. It is 13 ½” overall length with a 7 ½” brown wash octagonal steel smooth bore sighted barrel. The barrel’s bore is clean. The all original walnut stock has just the bumps and bruises to be expected with age, chequered grip panels & inlaid brass disc. The blued metal work is clean and the trigger guard has an extended tang with Pineapple finial. The lock plate is crisply engraved 'Simmons' (most likely William Simmons Gunsmith recorded in 1836 as having premises at Chamber Street London (see page 203 of British Gunmakers Vol 1 by Brown). The name is repeated on the top barrel flat. The lock with sliding safety bolt functions as it should and the breech has an inlaid platinum vent roundel and line.
