Early 1800’s Gun Size C & J.W. Hawksley Sheffield Embossed Shell Design Copper Black Powder Flask With Graduated, Sprung Brass Nozzle Charger. Sn 17984 - 17984
Decoration of 19th century powder flasks varied dramatically with hunting, game animals, foliate, village, military and marine scenes. This quality flask falls into the category of Shell & Bush décor featuring deep embossed shell (see page 286 of The powder flask book by Riling). The Sheffield based company Geo & JW Hawksley are recorded at 35 Smithfield 1845 and various addresses on Carver Street Sheffield from 1854 through to the 1940’s when the Company was bought by James Dixon & Sons (see page 114 of Riling’s book). This is an excellent, copper, gun size, black powder flask by C &JW Hawksley. It is deeply embossed with shell decoration and a ring of foliate decoration at the throat. The screw top brass charger has measurement adjustment ‘2 ¼ , 2 ½, 2 ¾, 3’ drams and spring lever which is fully functioning with a strong action. The charger is crisply marked ‘C & J.W. Hawksley Sheffield’. The flask is 8 ¼” length and 3 ¼” diameter at its widest. The copper body has just a few light dents to be expected. There are no cracks, damage or signs of repair. Large, Victorian French Polished Flattened Cow Horn Black Powder Flask For Rifles With ‘Staff Of Hermes AB’ Retailer / Manufacturer mark (A. Boche, Paris) Graduated Hinged Brass Charger & Hanging Rings. A 1014 - A 1014
This is an excellent, original, complete, French form , Victorian, Black Powder Flask for rifles . It is similar in form to chargers illustrated on page 395 item 1168-2 & page 401 item 1173 of the Powder Flask Book by Riling, both having the same form and hinged charger. It measures 10" overall length with charger closed and the polished, flattened horn flask and the flat brass base secured by 6 pins is 1 ¼” x 3 ½” . The horn has just light surface wear to be expected and has a brass throat cap with sprung brass opening lever. The throat cap has a small ‘staff of Hermes AB’ manufacturer mark (illustrated). AB is identified as A. Boche 45 Rue des Vinaigriers Paris noted as a seller of Sporting Equipment in the 1867 Exposition catalogue (see page 118 of Riling’s book) .A pivoting, hinged brass charger is secured to the throat cap. Large, Austrian, Victorian Era, Polished, Flattened Horn Black Powder Flask With Beetz Charger Brass Swivel Head, Inspection Window & Adjustable Measure. A 1005 - A 1005
This is an excellent original complete Austrian , Victorian, Brass Swivel Head Black Powder Flask. It measures 10" overall length and the polished, flattened horn flask is 2 ½” at it's widest point. The horn is un-damaged and has a brass end cap. The horn is fitted with 4 small brass rings and has its original screw thread, brass swivel head ‘Beetz Charger’ nozzle with graduated measures. The nozzle has glazed inspection windows on the left and right sides (see page 424 and image 1411 of The Powder flask Book by Riling). This is a good British Frith Patent Brass Leather Bandolier Mounted Shot Carrier For Flintlock / Percussion Shotgunners made sometime in the late 1700’s / early 1800s. The brass shot carrier is 4 ¾” overall length. It has a removable cylindrical shot shovel released by depression of a flat steel catch on its cap. The body of the shot carrier is marked ‘P.Frith Patent’. The carrier has its original purpose made leather bandolier with 2 ¼” wide padded leather shoulder strap which is 50” overall length. This is an excellent original complete English, Victorian, Sykes 'Extra Patent', Leather Shot Flask With Nickel Plated Brass Nozzle. It measures 7 1/4" overall length and the leather pouch is 1 3/4" at it's widest point. The base of the pouch is fitted with a heavy duty leather lanyard ring. It has it's original screw thread, Nickel Plated nozzle with sprung lever and adjustable shot measures marked '1 & 1 1/4 oz'. The steel nozzle lever is crisply marked by the manufacturer 'Sykes Extra'. All stitching of the leather is intact and the nozzle retains it's original nickel finish.
