**1855 CRIMEA WAR ERA**MATCHING NUMBERS**British Colt London Navy Model 1851 .36 Calibre Cap & Ball Revolver. Sn 20709:21 - 20709:21
The Colt Model 1851 Navy was a muzzle-loading, single action, cap & ball .36 calibre revolver used during the American Civil War. It was used as a side arm by Cavalry, Infantry, Artillery troops, and Naval forces. The weapons were also favoured by British Officer’s during the Crimean War due to their innovative design and ease of loading. During the Crimea War, The British Government ordered 9,000 Colt revolvers. This Colt London Model 1851 Navy revolver is in superb original condition. The pistol has a 7 ½” octagonal steel barrel and measures 13 ½” overall. The barrel’s bore is clean with well defined rifling. The metal work has areas of age and service use related pitting. The weapon has a brass post foresight and 'notched hammer' rear sight. It has a captive 'lever' ramrod. The barrel is crisply stamped with manufacturer detail 'Address Col. Colt London'. The cylinder has British Victorian ‘Crown V’ and ‘Crown P’ proof marks and It has all matching serial numbers '19536' on the barrel block, frame, trigger guard, butt strap & cylinder which dates its manufacturer to 1855 during the Crimea war (1853-1856). **MINT BORE**American Civil War Era 1861-1874 Smith & Wesson Model 2 Army 'Tip Up' Barrel .32 Rim Fire Obsolete Calibre 6 Shot Belt Revolver. Sn 20709:7 - 20709:7
The American Civil War created a large demand for handguns of all shapes and sizes including S&W ‘s Model 2 Army belt revolver. These pistols were manufactured 1861 - 1874, with a total production of 77,020. This is a nice original example of the Smith & Wesson Model 2 Army 'Tip Up' Barrel 6 shot Revolver in .32 Rim Fire Obsolete Calibre. The pistol’s metal work has even aged patina. It has an undamaged original American Walnut grip. The butt of the grip frame is numbered ‘35185’. The cylinder has 1860 patent detail (illustrated). The top rib of its 6” octagonal barrel is marked with the S&W Springfield Mass address. The barrel’s rifled bore is near mint clean & bright with crisp rifling. The pistol measures 11” overall and has a brass blade fore sight, ‘v’ notch bar rear sight and sheathed trigger. The pistol’s single action cocking & firing mechanism works crisply. 1858 - Early 1860’s American Civil War Era Eli Whitney (Whitneyville Armoury) USA .36 Naval Calibre, 6 Shot Single Action (Remington Army /Navy Type) Percussion Revolver With Octagonal Barrel. Sn 20709:6 - 20709:6
The Whitneyville Armoury USA was founded 1798 in New Haven Connecticut by Eli Whitney. Whitney produced approx. 33,000 revolvers to compete with Colt & Remington patent revolvers. Many were purchased by the Union Army & Navy and saw service in the American Civil War. In 1888, the Whitney Arms Company was sold to the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. This is a nice original 7 ½” octagonal barrel Eli Whitney Remington Navy type .36" Calibre, 6 shot percussion revolver with drop down loading lever. The frame is similar in appearance to Remington Army & Navy Revolvers. The lever is stamped with number that looks like ‘5380’ and has an ‘L’ factory inspection mark. The bore has just light staining consistent with age and well defined rifling. The metal work even aged patina throughout. The top of the barrel has visible but faint ‘E.Whitney N.Haven’ address. The pistol has a small brass post fore sight, notched hammer and grooved frame rear sight. It has a brass trigger guard. Its original Walnut grips have just light bumps and bruises consistent with age and use. The pistol's single action cocking and firing mechanism is crisp. The price includes UK delivery. NB. **MATCHING NUMBERS**Brace Of Substantial Model 1798 Austrian Cavalry Officer’s 15 Bore Flintlock Pistols With Liege Proofs By Gottlieb Bentz & Brass Furniture. Sn 20616 - 20616
This is an excellent, large & heavy pair of Model 1798 Austrian Cavalry Officer’s 15 Bore Flintlock Pistols. Both pistols have 9 ¾” round steel barrels (each 17” overall length), original iron ram-rods and original Walnut one piece full stocks with blackened brass furniture including cudgel butt caps with iron lanyard rings and brass muzzle block with cast blade foresight. The barrel’s smooth bores have staining and residue consistent with age and use. The lock plates of each pistol have matching numbers ‘853’. The pistols have other un-matching numbers and possible Regiment marks (all illustrated). Both barrels have Liege ‘ELG’ proofs and are signed by the maker ‘G (Gottlieb). Bentz’ (illustrated). Due to heavy production demands for Sea service pistols the British Admiralty turned to their Belgian allies to produce Sea Service pattern pistols to supplement British made supplies. Liege pistols, although not the fine quality of the British version, were robust, heavy and well made resulting in other nations Governments also contracting Liege pistols for their armed forces. This is an original Victorian, Liege contract Tower Sea Service Customs / Revenue type percussion pistol. It is 12” overall length with 6” blued steel barrel in .650 Carbine Calibre. The barrel’s smooth bore is near mint clean and bright. The barrel is un-sighted. The Walnut full stock is a nice deep brown with regulation pattern brass furniture & has just light bumps & bruises to be expected with age and service use. It has its original captive steel ram rod & steel lanyard ring to the brass butt which is numbered ‘744’. The action plate is marked ‘Tower’ & with Crown VR (Victoria Regina). George Henry Daw was an English Gunmaker originally established 1780, he worked C1861 -1865 at 57 Threadneedle Street London (see Witton & Daw page 216 of British Gunmakers Vol.1 by Brown). This is an excellent Officer’s private purchase, percussion pistol by George Henry Daw made at 57 Threadneedle Street London. It is 12” overall with a 6” heavy steel barrel. The barrel has a ‘v’ notch block rear sight. The top of the barrel is signed ‘George H Daw 57 Threadneedle Street London’ and has proofs. The barrel’s smooth bore has just light staining consistent with age and use. It’s steel action plate is signed ‘George H Daw’. It has a heavy military hammer, brass fittings and steel military lanyard ring. It has an excellent undamaged all original walnut stock fitted with steel belt bar. An original French Model 1822 Tulle Arsenal Cavalry pistol converted from flintlock to percussion with a rifled barrel. Many of these pistols were carried by Confederate troops in the American Civil war supplied by their French allies. This pistol has a Walnut Stock with regulation brass fittings. The wood has impressed roundels and numbers (illustrated). The brass has several inspection marks. The wood is all original with just bumps and bruises to be expected. The lock plate is stamped with ‘Tulle Arsenal’ detail. The 8” 2 stage barrel is date stamped with "1862 date" and "M.R." on the right hand side and "C de 17. 7N ES M" on the left hand side. It also has Model 1822 model designation behind the rear sight. The pistol’s rifled bore is near mint, clean & bright with crisp rifling. The pistol retains the original iron ramrod / powder measure. The pistol's foresight and back sight are original and undamaged. The pistol cocks and dry fires with a strong action. The pistol’s butt has a steel military lanyard ring. C1820 English Hill London 50 Bore Flintlock Pocket Pistol With Turn Off Barrel. Sn 20369 - 20369
This an excellent English Flintlock pocket pistol. It is 6 ½” overall with a 1 ¾” screw off barrel. The barrel’s smooth bore is clean. The underside of the action has crisp Birmingham proof marks. Its steel action is decorated with Martial banners on the right side and with the manufacturer's name 'Hill' on one side and ‘London’ with Martial banners on the reverse (most likely one of 2 gunmakers, either, John Hill who worked as a gun barrel filer at Royal Enfield 1808-1817 then as a gunmaker at 40 St Catherine Street, Tower Hill 1817-1820. He is then recorded at 168 Tooley Street, Borough 1823-1831 and 76 Tooley Street 1832-1856. He is finally recorded at Essex Street & New Road Whitechapel 1836-1856, the second man William Hill was a gunsmith recorded at Plough Street, Whitechapel 1818-1824, see page 169 of British Gunmakers Vol 1 by Brown). It has an undamaged original bag shaped wood grip. The back of the grip has an inlaid void white metal escutcheon. The cock is fitted with a flint. The weapon cocks and dry fires crisply. 1795-1832 English, .44" Bore, Brass Framed Percussion Pocket Pistol With Screw Off Barrel By Patrick Of Liverpool. A 530. - A 530
Jeremiah Patrick was an English Liverpool based Gunsmith between 1795-1814 The business was then taken on by Edward Patrick between 1814-1820 & finally by Ann Patrick from 1820-1832. This is a fine .44" Bore brass framed percussion pocket pistol by Patrick. It is 6 inches overall with a 1 3/4" screw off barrel & a dolphin hammer. On the left side amongst the fine foliate decoration is engraved 'Patrick' and the right 'Liverpool' within foliate design. It has a concealed folding trigger & sliding safety catch feature. The action works as it should. It has impressed proof /inspection marks on the barrel and frame. The bag shaped wood grip is excellent & undamaged and is inlaid with a void silver escutcheon. C1840 Samuel Conway Stockport (Cheshire) 60 Bore Steel Box Lock Action Percussion Pocket Pistol With Steel Turn Off Barrel, Black Powder Proofs & Concealed Folding Trigger. Sn 18604 - 18604
Samuel Conway was an English Cheshire based Gunsmith. In 1840 he is recorded as having premises at 4 Middle Hillgate Stockport (see page 196 of Brown’s book British Gunmakers Vol.2). This is a very good percussion pocket pistol by Conway. The pistol is 6” overall with a 1 ¾” screw off smoothbore round steel barrel. The bore has staining and residue consistent with age & use (a tool is required to remove the barrel, we do not have a tool). The left side of the German Silver action is crisply engraved 'Conway' within oval & has foliate decoration. The right ’Stockport’ within oval & has foliate decoration. It has a folding concealed trigger and Dolphin hammer. The action is strong. It has crisp proof marks on the underside of the action and barrel. Its original, undamaged walnut grip has no damage.
