This is an original MK IV. 1886 dated .577x .450 Martini Henry, long lever Service Rifle. It has its original woodwork throughout. The wood has Enfield roundel and other ink marks (illustrated). The metal work has British WD and India arsenal marks and ‘N.E.P’ , N.S’ Nepalese Native Service stamps (illustrated). It has a block & blade fore sight, flip up ladder rear sight, steel butt plate, sling swivels, cleaning rod & bayonet lug. The 33” steel barrel’s bore has staining consistent with age & sharp, well defined multi groove rifling. The metal work has even patina. The action works crisply. The action is stamped on the right side Crown VR (Victoria Regina) Enfield, ‘Mark IV I’ model designation and dated '1886' together with WD arrow. Victorian C1850 English Westley Richards, 16 Bore, Double Barrel Muzzle Loading Percussion Shotgun. Sn 19512 - 19512
The renowned English Gunsmiths Westley Richards & Co have been making unique and best quality shotguns and rifles for over 200 years. This is a Victorian era 16 Bore double barrel shotgun made by Westley Richards in good condition. It has Walnut furniture with finely chequered wrist and fore stock. The wood has knocks bumps and bruises to be expected with age and use. The stock has an inlaid void silver escutcheon. The shotgun with double 27 ¼”, steel barrels, has double hammers & triggers. It measures 44 ¼” overall. The barrel rib has a bead fore sight. The action plates, action tang and trigger guard with extended tang have foliate engraved decoration. The action has an inlaid silver band and silver roundels are inlaid at the breech of each barrel. Both action plates are signed ‘Westley Richards’. The cocking & firing actions of the weapon work crisply. The barrels smooth bores have just light staining consistent with age. This is an excellent original MK II .577x .450 Martini Henry, British Service Rifle with later South African WD marks. It is fully British ordnance stamped and has its original woodwork throughout. The wood has an ink Enfield rifle and struck out dates. It has block and blade fore sight, flip up ladder rear sight, steel butt plate, sling swivels fitted with leather sling which is impressed ‘Edward Day Made In Canada’, cleaning rod & bayonet lug. The steel barrel's bore is clean & has crisp rifling. The metal work retains its original blue finish. The action works crisply. The action is stamped on the right side Crown VR (Victoria Regina) Enfield, Mark II model designation and dated '1888'. The Pattern 1856 was the first short rifle in the new .577 calibre family of muskets made by Enfield for the British Army. The Pattern 1856 was issued to all Sergeants of Line Regiments & the Rifle Brigade. This is an excellent volunteer officer’s private purchase Enfield Pattern 1856 short rifle. The action is dated 1859 & is marked ‘Tower’ (Enfield) together with Victorian Queen’s Crown. It has all original woodwork with steel butt plate, sling swivels, trigger guard, bayonet lug, fore end cap together with ramrod. The wood has chequered panels at the fore stock and wrist indicating this is a private purchase weapon. The wood has knocks bumps and bruises consistent with age and service use. 1849 British WD Enfield Tower.702 Calibre Muzzle Loading, Percussion Rifled Carbine Stock Impressed ‘Barnett Gunmakers London’. Sn 19164 - 19164
The London based Barnett family of Gunsmiths are recorded at various addresses in London from 1796 to 1908 starting with Thomas Barnett at 134 Minories who later became Thomas Barnett & Sons and later John Edward Barnett at the Minories & 37 Camomile Street, ending as JE Barnett & Sons Ltd at Brewhouse Lane, Leaman Street & Duncan Street (see page 140 of Brown’s book British Gunmakers Vol.1). This is an original British 1849 Enfield Tower made Carbine with stock marked by Barnett. It has excellent all original wood stock and original finish to the metal work. The wood is crisply impressed with ‘WD & Broad Arrow’ and most likely the stock maker’s cartouche ‘Barnett Gunmakers London’. It has a heavy military percussion hammer and the action plate is crisply stamped ‘Crown VR (Victoria Regina) & ‘Tower’ (Enfield) ‘1849’. Its 24" barrel (40” overall) is rifled and has just light staining consistent with age and use. The barrel has proofs. It has a ‘v’ notch block rear sight and block & blade fore sight. It has iron ramrod and sling swivels. The carbine also has brass fore end block, trigger guard, ram rod flutes & butt plate. The carbine cocks & dry fires crisply. The price includes UK delivery. The Enfield Pattern 1853 rifle was a .577 calibre Minié-type muzzle-loading rifled musket, used by the British Empire from 1853 to 1867; after which many were replaced in service by the cartridge-loaded Snider–Enfield rifle. This 3 band muzzle loading P1853 Enfield has been contemporarily converted to the breech loading snider system. The rifle has no maker, date or inspection marks. It has all original walnut stock which has bumps and bruises to be expected, brass butt plate, trigger guard, fore end block & steel cleaning rod. The rifle has its original block and blade fore sight and flip up graduated ladder rear sight. Its sling swivels are fitted with buff leather sling. This Victorian Lowe Chester 13 Bore Single Barrel Muzzle Loading Single Barrel Percussion Sporting / Hunting Shotgun has a 32 ½” long steel barrel & measures 48 ½” overall. The barrel’s smooth bore has staining & residue consistent with age and use. It has a shallow grooved action rear sight. The gun has an undamaged walnut stock with German Silver fore end cap. The wrist has an inlaid silver escutcheon with engraved stylised monogram. It has a steel butt plate with extended tang, trigger guard with extended tang and Pineapple finial & steel hammer. The metal work has areas of foliate engraved decoration. The barrel has a partial gold band and gold manufacturer cartouche ‘Lowe Chester’ ( either Thomas Lowe recorded at Northgate Street Chester 1815-1834, William Lowe Northgate Street 1847-1869 or James Lowe Five Ashes Hough Green Chester 1864 see page 277 of British Gunmakers Vol.2 by Brown). The Braendlin Armoury, was at one time arguably the largest British commercial manufacturer of Martinis with many of the high-end sporters and volunteer rifles of the era. Victorian British Officers & Militia Units regularly purchased their own Martini Henry Rifles. These Rifles were manufactured under Enfield contracts to the same specification as their Military counterparts and sold into the retail market for private purchase. This is an excellent, original, Victorian private purchase, Martini Henry, short lever carbine size rifle by the Braendlin Armoury. It has its original, cleaning rod, block and blade fore sight, flip up ladder rear sight, grooved trigger & sling swivels. It has all original undamaged woodwork throughout which has just light bumps and bruises to be expected. The underside of the stock is impressed with number ‘1242’. The steel barrel's bore is near mint with crisp Henry patent rifling. The barrel is marked with Henry’s Patent (illustrated) and has proof marks. The Martini Patent marked action works as it should and has 'Bakers Improved Safety Bolt No.120'. The Baker’s safety lever functions as it should. Enfield Pattern 1853 cavalry carbines were used by the British army In India. By 1866 the stock of Tower P 53’s became diminished and conditions in India called for another issue of smooth bore carbines resulting in production of the ‘Bengal Light Cavalry Carbine’. The Tower made Enfield Pattern 1858 Native Mounted Police .656 Calibre, Smooth Bore, Percussion Carbine. The first production of 8000 Carbines used lock plates that were available from store, most if not all dated 1858. The carbine is smoothbore and .656 calibre. Known as the the P58-67 it has a two piece butt plate with 'chequering' between. This original Carbine has a two piece Butt Plate and 1858 dated lockplate. The carbines were generally of superior quality to the P 53’s. This original Enfield Pattern 1858 Native Mounted Police .656 Calibre, Smooth Bore, Percussion Carbine has the correct butt with brass edge caps and central exposed wood cross hatch chequering. It is in good condition. It has all original walnut stock which has knocks and bumps to be expected. The metal work has areas of service wear. It has a heavy military percussion hammer and the lock plate is crisply stamped Crown VR (Victoria Regina) & 'Tower’ (Enfield) together with inspection mark and 1858 date indicating it was one of the first production Bengal light cavalry carbines. Its 21" barrel (37” overall) & has a smooth bore which has staining and residue consistent with age. The top of the barrel is stamped with Victorian proof/inspection mark and number ‘55’. It has a fixed ‘v’ notch plate rear sight and block & blade fore sight. It has the correct under barrel captive swivel steel ramrod and riveted on fore cap. The carbine also has brass fore end block & trigger guard. The guard is marked ‘33DSB’ most likely a unit mark (unknown). It is complete with correct steel saddle bar & ring. The stock is impressed with indistinct roundels. It cocks & dry fires crisply. The action has its original nipple protector and chain. 1890’s British Charles (Chas) Osborne & Co London Martini Action .577 x.450 Obsolete Calibre Sporting Rifle. Sn 18448 - 18448
Charles Osborne commenced trading under his own name C1845 in Lichfield Street, Birmingham but by 1855 he was in Whittall Street, Birmingham where he maintained premises right up until 1928 when the business was acquired by Skimin & Wood, a highly respected gunmaker to the trade. Osborne first opened for business in London in 1881 in the vicinity of Houses of Parliament where he stayed until the business left London in 1928. Charles Osborne became a Limited company in 1896.This is an excellent Martini action sporting rifle by Osborne & Co. The underside of the action is numbered ‘1550’. The metal work is undamaged. The wood work is all original and has a chequered panel wrist and fore stock. It has a steel butt plate & sling swivel lugs. The 28” barrel has a clean bore with crisp multi groove rifling and the rifle measures 45 ½” overall length. The barrel is marked ‘.450’ (calibre) and has small inspection mark. The barrel has a block and blade fore sight and flip up ladder rear sight. The rifle’s cocking & firing actions work crisply. The price includes UK delivery.
