The Flintlock: Its Origin And Development by Torsten Link. BO 311 - BO 311
This is the first English translation of a masterly study of The Flintlock which was originally published in 1939 but in Swedish. The author was the director of the Swedish Royal Armoury which he had joined in 1924. This book was the result of 15 years of research and was in fact his doctoral thesis making it a masterly and important study of the flintlock. The book charts the development and history of the flintlock from its original concept to its successor, the percussion cap. The book is profusely illustrated with crisp black and white photographs showing both full flintlocks and minor details of decoration etc. the book which was published by The Holland Press, London in 1965 is in excellent condition with its original dust wrapper which is complete but with sellotape to the edges. These sets of books are all from the library of the Imperial War Museum library which were released recently. They comprise a hard back copy of Infantry Training 1937 (Training and War). This covers all aspects of infantry training including weapons, drill, battle procedure, patrols etc. The book is signed on the inside cover C.E.E.Scott. Also included is a rare illustrated pamphlet with photographs plates of Infantry Training Volume 1 Skill at Arms – Shoot to Kill. This is an original H.M.S.O. restricted issue of 1975 and is not a copy. With this volume comes 3 pamphlet amendments from 1976, 1980 and 1981. These volumes comprehensively cover all aspects of weapons and shooting including L.1.A.1. rifle, Browning 9mm pistol, S.M.G. and G.M.P.G./L.M.G.. There is also a copy of Infantry Training Volume III, Ranges and Courses which covers rules and matches of the army and T.A. rifle associations. This volume is another H.M.S.O. restricted publication from 1973 and carries a small rubber stamp “IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUMS WITHDRAWN FROM STOCK”. This set comprises the revised edition of Brian Robson’s classic work on Swords of the British Army (The Regulation Patterns 1788 to 1914). The original appeared to great acclaim in 1975 and in the intervening years, the author has researched and revised his work so that this 1996 edition has now become the standard work. It covers all the regulation patterns from 1788 to 1914 and is profusely illustrated. Also included is a copy of World Swords 1400 – 1945 by Harvey J.S.Withers and covers all the most important swords from all the major countries. It is illustrated in colour and has a brief description of each sword with close up shots of the blades, hilts etc. There are over 2,000 full colour photographs making it an indispensable reference work. There is also a copy of An Illustrated History of Bayonets by Martin J.Brayley. This is also illustrated in colour and black and white with over 500 photographs of 300 bayonets. This is a small collection of items form a family comprising an R.A.A.F. aerial dead reckoning computer Mark 1 manufactured in the 1930s by W&G of Melbourne for the Australian military. ( A printout of an identical item is included. A R.A.F.pilots flying manual from 1949, rubber stamped to the title page ‘TECHNICAL LIBRARY No 1 B F T S R.A.A.F. Uranqunity N.S.W.. There are also 5 other items namely a pocket fold out of silhouettes of aircraft ‘Air Ministry RESTRICTED October 1951’, a glossary of flying, a photo book of Jets of the R.A.F Series 1, a Selas picket signal reminder and an empty R.A.A.F. aircrew check lists folder. This is an accumulation of one mans service from the late 1940s to the early 1960s. These three volumes were purchased from the Imperial War Museum reserve stock and have the I.W.M. withdrawn and stock stamp. The set comprises a Field Service Regulations Vol 1 dated 1930, Field Service Regulations Vol 2 dated 1935, Manual of Elementary Drill dated 1935. A volume is named to a Lt. Col. E.S.B Williams and they are worthy of further research.
