WW1 Era British Officer’s Private Purchase Bowie Trench Fighting Knife With Ebony Handle & German Silver Fittings Blade Marked With Kings Crown ‘GR’ By Rodgers & Sons Sheffield With Original Leather Scabbard. Sn 12569. - 12569
Joseph Rodgers is perhaps rivalled only by George Wostenholm in terms of its importance to Sheffield cutlery and its fame around the world. The mark of The Star and Maltese Cross was registered by the Rodgers Company in 1764. With increasing business in what is thought to have been exclusively Pocket Knives, in around 1780, the firm moved to larger premises at No. 6 Norfolk Street. Eventually, as Rodgers expanded, it would acquire surrounding property until the famous Norfolk Street Works occupied the entire plot. Joseph Rodgers’ success is evident in the firm’s appointment to five successive sovereigns - George IV, William IV, Queen Victoria, Edward II and George V. Rodgers & Sons made popular private purchase weapons during WW1 including trench daggers. This a is an original WW1 era British Officer’s private purchase trench fighting knife by Joseph Rodgers & Sons with its original leather scabbard. It has an ebony handle which has a deep chequered design. The pommel has a small, old, stable chip. It has a German Silver ferrule and finger guard. It’s slim, clean, 6 ¾” single edged, Bowie shaped steel blade is marked ‘J. Rodgers & Sons 6 Norfolk St, Sheffield, England’ together with Kings Crown and ‘GR’ (George Rex) and the reverse with Star and Maltese Cross trademark. The knife measures 11” overall length. Its original brown leather scabbard has a riveted integral belt loop and retaining strap with small buckle. The top 2 rivets on the rear of the scabbard which form the belt loop are absent but an old contemporary repair secures the top of the belt loop to the scabbard body. MINT Boxed & Cased Limited Edition No.75 of 7,500 Commemorative 2nd Pattern FS Fighting Knife 'The Battle Of The Rhineland' By Wilkinson Sword From The Sterling Silver WW2 Victory Collection By The American Historical Foundation. ED 251. - ED 251
This superb Sterling Silver 2nd pattern FS Commando dagger was issued by The American Historical Foundation to as part of their 'WW2 Victory Collection' to commemorate the WW2 Battle Of The Rhineland. Only 7,500 daggers were produced for the Edition. The full size dagger is 11 3/4" overall length and is in pristine condition. It has a beautiful blade etched on one side with the Wilkinson Sword London name & crossed swords legend together with a depiction of the Remagen Bridge over the River Rhine. The ricasso is stamped with the weapons Edition number '75'. The reverse is etched 'In Honor Of The Battle Of The Rhineland’ with battle honour roll within scrolling panels. The knurled handle and plain cross guard retain all of their original finish. The dagger is contained in its original wooden case covered with grey velour material. The case has a hinged lid and 2 brass clasp fasteners. The inside of the case is lined with grey velour & white silk. It is contoured to snugly fit the dagger and the silk interior has the wording 'The World War II Victory Collection, The Battle Of The Rhineland Limited Edition Issued By The American Historical Foundation, Richmond Virginia' all in Gold. **RARE**Limited Edition One Of Only 400**Cased, WW2 Commemorative Wilkinson Sword Fairbairn Sykes 3rd Pattern FS Fighting Knife 'United We Conquer 1940-1945' With Etched Blade. Sn 21466 - 21466
The British Commandos were formed in the early stages of the Second World War, in June 1940, following a request from the British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, for a force that could carry out raids against German-occupied Europe. Initially drawn from within the British Army from soldiers who volunteered for the Special Service Brigade, the Commandos' ranks would eventually be filled by members of all branches of the United Kingdom's armed forces and a number of foreign volunteers from German-occupied countries. Reaching a war time strength of over 30 individual units and four assault brigades, the Commandos served in all theatres of war from the Arctic Circle to Europe and from the Mediterranean and Middle East Theatre to South-East Asia. Their operations ranged from small groups of men landing from the sea or by parachute to a brigade of assault troops spearheading the Allied invasions of Europe and Asia. All Commandos were issued with the iconic FS Fighting knife. This attractive full size (11 ½” overall) 3rd pattern FS Commando dagger was produced post WW2 by Wilkinson Sword in a Limited Edition of 400 blades for the American market & 500 for the British & Canadian markets to Commemorate the British Commandos WW2 Service 1940-1945 (see page 97 items 482 & 483 of the book ‘Fighting Knives’ by Stephens). The knife is in excellent condition. It has a blued blade etched on both sides, one side ‘United We Conquer 1940-1945’. The reverse with panel of foliate decoration. The ricasso of one side is etched with the Wilkinson Sword manufacturer's panel & QEII Royal Appointment. The reverse has Wilkinson name & Royal appointment together with ‘US’ indicating this is one of the 400 blades made for the American market (there is no visible blade production number). The ribbed 3rd pattern handle and cross guard retain their original blue finish. The dagger is contained in its later quality made leatherette wrapped wooden case. The case has a hinged lid and clasp fasteners. The inside of the case is lined with green felt. It is contoured to snugly fit the dagger. WW1 Era German Philipp Schmid Nurnberg Trench/Fighting Knife With Stag Antler Scales & Scabbard. Sn 21465 - 21465
This is an excellent original WW1 era German trench / fighting knife and leather scabbard. The knife has excellent undamaged solid Stag antler scales each secured by 3 steel pins (see page 38 item 162 of Stephen's book 'Fighting Knives' where a similar un-named variant made pre WW1 is illustrated). The dagger is full tang with integral small finger guard. The single edged steel blade is 5” length. The undamaged blade has some areas of light staining consistent with age. The blade is crisply marked on one side by the manufacturer or retailer ‘Philipp Schmid Nurnberg’. It is just under 10” overall length. French Model 1833 Naval Boarding Dirk / Fighting Knife With Naval Anchor & Other Inspection Marks, Triangular Section Blade & Scabbard. Sn 21464 - 21464
These dirks were carried by French Navy boarding parties when attacking enemy ships. They were normally carried as a back up to a cutlass, axe or pike. Many of these weapons found their way into the Union and Confederate Navies before the outbreak of the American Civil War. Our example of the M 1833 dirk is in excellent condition. It has the correct, clean, 6 ¾” triangular section blade. The blade has a small inspection mark (illustrated). Its wood handle has no damage and correct pommel nut with fixed lanyard ring. The brass finger guard has crisp Naval ‘anchor’ and other inspection marks (all illustrated). WW2, U.S Cattaraugus 225Q ' Quartermasters' Fighting Utility Knife And Sheath. ED 886. - ED 886
During WW2 Quartermaster staff needed a heavy duty combat knife which was strong enough to open ammunition boxes and crates. The American Company Cattaraugus produced the 225Q (Q for Quartermaster), which because of their strength, soon found their way into regular service as a combat knife ( see page 67 Of U.S Military Knives By Cole & page 123 of US Military Knives Collectors Guide By Silvey & Boyd). This is a nice original example. It has a sturdy, broad single edged fullered 6 1/4" blade (10 ½” inches overall). The ricasso is crisply engraved with the 'Cattaraugus' signature legend and designation '225Q'. The blade has some areas of staining consistent with age. Its banded handle made from compressed leather washers is in good condition with just service wear to be expected. It has a steel finger guard and large oval steel pommel with flat chequered end. Victorian Era Colquhoun & Cadman Sheffield ‘Go Ahead’ Trademark Bowie Knife With Stag Antler Scales & Original Leather Scabbard. Sn 21420 - 21420
Edward Dewing Colquhoun ( 1833-1907) & Edwin Cadman (1856-1937) were Sheffield cutlers based at the Douglas Works 113 Arundel Street making knives, joiner’s tools, razors and ice skates. The partnership created their ‘Go Ahead’ trademark which would be sold to Thomas Ellin & Co shortly before Colquhoun’s death in 1907(see page 161 of Tweedale’s Directory Of Sheffield Cutlery Manufacturers Expanded 2nd Edition). This is a nice original Victorian ‘Go Ahead’ trademark Bowie by Colquhoun & Cadman with original Scabbard. It has undamaged stag antler scales secured by steel pins. One scale is mounted with a void German silver bar and it has an oval German silver cross guard. It has a 7” single edged, steel bowie blade, signed by the makers ‘Colquhoun & Cadman Sheffield’ together with their ‘Go Ahead’ Trademark. The Bowie measures just under 11 ½” overall length. Its original open top brown leather scabbard has a single copper riveted belt loop to the rear and stitched seam to the front. **LARGE** Victorian / Edwardian American Wild West Era / African Export Piece S&J Kitchin Sheffield ‘Snake Brand’ Hunting Knife With Polished Horn Scales Inset With Brass Hunting Scenes & Later Bespoke Leather Scabbard. Sn 21296 - 21296
The "Snake Brand" trademark on cutlery was registered to Samuel Kitchin of Sheffield at least as early as the 1860's. The Kitchin family settled in Shefield around 1737 (see page 219 of the Sheffield Knife Book by Tweedale). The founder Samuel was regularly listed as a cutler in Sheffield directories. By 1868 he had been joined by John (possibly son) at the Soho works in Summerfield Street. In the early 20th century the Company exported knives to Wild West USA and Africa (marketing to African tribesmen). This is an excellent original large S&J Kitchin Sheffield ‘Snake Brand’ hunting knife no doubt an export piece for the American or African market. The full tang knife has a 14” long single edged steel blade which is 2” broad at its widest and it measures 19” overall length. The blade has just light staining consistent with age and no damage to the cutting edge. One side of the blade has Kitchin’s ‘Snake Brand’ trademark. The knife has polished horn scales, each inset with brass hunting scene figures depicting a Stag being chased by hunting dogs and mounted riders. The scales are secured by brass pins. The knife is contained in its later quality made bespoke open top leather scabbard. The leather has tooled decoration to the front and a single belt loop to the rear. WW2 Production Nazi German 1933 Pattern NSKK Dagger By RZM M7 / 33 (F W. Holler, Solingen), Motto Etched Blade & Scabbard With Belt Hanger. Sn 21419 - 21419
This is an original Wartime Nazi production 1933 pattern NSKK dagger and scabbard in excellent condition. The blade is crisply stamped with the wartime Nazi production code RZM M7 / 33 (F W. Holler, Solingen). Holler made approximately 1,000 early production daggers which are rated as rarity value 7 (10 being highest rarity value) in the book ‘The service daggers of the SA & The NSKK’ by Siegert. Holler continued to produce SA/ NSKK daggers after 1940 when only their RZM code is found on blades produced by the company. The lack of manufacturer’s own civilian trademark indicates that this is a Nazi wartime production dagger. The wood grip is original and undamaged. The Nazi German National Emblem and 'SA' roundel are perfectly fitted. It has a Nickel plated cross guard & pommel. The blade has the correct crisp "Alles Fur Deutschland" motto inscription. The dagger is complete with its original NSKK black anodised metal scabbard. The scabbard has a single hanging ring, nickel plated chape and throat mount. The ring is fitted with original leather tab belt hanger. It has its original nickel plated buckle & nickel plated sprung clip. Norwegian Helle Fabrikker Hunting / Fishing Knife and Open Top Ornate Metal Scabbard. 15908:3. - 15908:3
Helle Fabrikker is situated in Holmedal, a small village by a Norwegian fjord. Here Nature, and a love of the outdoors, is a part of everyday life. This has been the home of Helle Knives since the brothers Sigmund and Steinar Helle started their business in 1932. These knives are not to be confused with "factory-made" knives that are usually produced in big volumes, on automated high-production machinery. At Helle, each knife is essentially hand crafted by experienced and dedicated cutlers. Each blade is individually ground by hand to achieve a shaving-sharp edge. Knife handles of carefully selected Arctic Curly Birch and "aged wood" are precisely shaped, and finished to a hand rubbed patina. The polished single edged blade is 11cm in length (21 ½ cm overall). It is laser etched; 18/8 High Carbon Edge – A/S – HELLE FABRIKKER – NORWAY. The solid hardwood grip is unmarked held with silver metal coloured pommel and base. The heavy silver metal coloured scabbard is ornately carved with a floral design. It is lined with thin leather inside and has a leather belt loop attached.
