**VERY RARE**British 1st Pattern Wilkinson FS Commando Fighting Knife With Double Etched Panels & 1st Pattern Scabbard With Correct Newey Stud Fastener. Sn 23484:95 - 23484:95
The 1st Pattern FS fighting knife was introduced in 1940 and produced by Wilkinson Sword (see page 63 of The Fairbairn Sykes Fighting Knife & Other Commando Knives By Flook). This is an increasingly rare to find, original, WW2 1st pattern, FS dagger with original 1st pattern scabbard. The hilt retains its original nickel finish and knurled grip. The ricasso is marked with correct blued etched panels, 'Wilkinson Sword London' together with crossed swords legend & the reverse 'The FS Fighting Knife'. Its double edged dagger blade with medial ridge measures 172mm in length (blade lengths of these FS knives vary as they were hand ground). The undamaged blade has just light staining consistent with age. It is complete with original 1st Pattern leather scabbard with nickel plated brass chape & integral belt loop with retaining strap which has the correct ‘Newey’ press stud fastener. The throat of the scabbard has a small cut which is stable and consistent with the weapon being drawn from the scabbard during service carry. All other leather & stitching are clean & intact. The Normandy landings (codenamed Operation Neptune) were the landing operations on Tuesday, 6 June 1944 (termed D-Day) of the Allied invasion of Normandy in Operation Overlord during World War II. The largest seaborne invasion in history, the operation began the liberation of German-occupied North Western Europe from Nazi control and contributed to the Allied victory in Europe. The verse ‘THEY SHALL GROW NOT OLD AS WE THAT ARE LEFT GROW OLD; AGE SHALL NOT WEARY THEM NOR THE YEARS CONDEMN. AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN AND IN THE MORNING WE SHALL REMEMBER THEM’ is from "For the Fallen", a poem written by Laurence Binyon in 1914 during the First World War, read throughout the world, most commonly in the UK on Remembrance Sunday in honour of those who have fallen in war. This is mint full size 2nd pattern FS Commando dagger was produced by Wilkinson Sword to Commemorate the WW2 D-Day Invasion & To remember the fallen. The knife is in near mint condition with all of its original plated finish. Its blade is etched on one side with decorative foliate panel and wording commemorating D-Day ‘1944 - 1994 TO COMMEMORATE THE 50th ANNIVERSARY OF OPERATIONS OVERLORD AND NEPTUNE, THE ALLIED LANDINGS ON THE COAST OF FRANCE ON D-DAY, THE 6th OF JUNE 1944’ & with the etched & blued Wilkinson Sword London name & Crossed swords legend. The reverse has etched & blued ‘FS Fighting Knife’ panel and is inscribed with the remembrance verse from the poem ‘The Fallen’ (all illustrated). The dagger is contained in its wooden case. 2nd Pattern Fairbairn Sykes 'FS' Fighting Knives were introduced in 1941. This is a rare to find, WW2 2nd pattern FS dagger with double etched & blued panels and scabbard. Examples of FS daggers with Wilkinson etched blades are illustrated in Chapter 7 of ‘The Fairbairn Sykes Fighting Knife & Other Commando Knives’ by Flook. The dagger has the correct blackened brass knurled handle & oval blued steel cross guard. The knife has a 161 mm long blade with medial ridge. The ricasso has etched and blued panels on both sides, one side 'Wilkinson Sword London with Crossed Swords Legend' & the reverse 'The FS Fighting Knife'. The blade is undamaged. The Nowill familly are recorded as Sheffield cutler's since the 16th Century. The family traded under various names and Trademarks until John Nowill acquired the 'crossed keys' trademark in 1842. John Nowill retired from the business in 1847 - three years before his death on 24 October 1850 and the name of the business adopted the 'Nowill & Sons' name. Nowill & Sons made FS Commando Fighting Knives for the British War Dept. In 1947 The Sheffield cutlers F. E. & J. R. Hopkinson Ltd acquired the assets of John Nowill and Frank Mills and used their names & trademarks when making knives (see page 242 of the Sheffield Knife book By Tweedale). 2nd Pattern Fairbairn Sykes 'FS' Fighting Knives were introduced in 1941 (see page 89-93 of The Fairbairn Sykes Fighting Knife & Other Commando Knives By Flook). This post WW2 Hopkinson Sheffield Nowill & Sons, WD marked 2nd pattern FS knife has a blued steel 2nd pattern knurled hilt which retains all of its original blue finish. Its blued double edged dagger blade with medial ridge measures 176mm in length. The blade is undamaged and sharp. The cross guard has Nowill & Sons name and Sheffield address together with Hopkinson ‘H’ within cartouche trademark and a stamped Broad Arrow mark. An excellent, original, 3rd Pattern Fairbairn Sykes fighting knife with etched Wilkinson Sword panel. These post WW2 quality knives were reputedly presented to the ‘best commando on course’ after completion of their arduous training and are highly prized fully functional fighting knives. The 3rd pattern knife was introduced in 1942 (see page 61 & 62 of British & Commonwealth Military Knives By Flook) and continued to be issued post war. This Commando prize FS has an undamaged ribbed and blackened alloy handle and oval blackened steel cross guard. It has a 179mm blued dagger blade with medial ridge. The blade has an etched panel on one side ‘Wilkinson Sword Ltd Made In England QE II Royal Appointment’ together with crossed swords legend within foliate panel. The etching is crisp. 3rd Pattern Fairbairn Sykes 'FS' Fighting Knives were introduced during WW2 (see page 89-93 of The Fairbairn Sykes Fighting Knife & Other Commando Knives By Flook). This is an original, British made WW2 3rd pattern, FS dagger and scabbard in very good condition. The hilt is alloy with correct ribbed grip. The hilt has cast number 2 mould mark and it has a blued steel oval cross guard. The cross guard is stamped ‘England’ indicating export to USA for Airborne & Ranger issue post WW2 in the 1950’s from wartime stock (see page 213 of Flook’s book where he describes an FS dagger with cross guard stamped ‘England’ as being a USA 1950’s export item from British war time stock). It has a 175 mm long double edged blued blade with medial ridge. The knife has its original scabbard with external brass chape. This commemorative full size (just over 11 ½” length) 2nd pattern FS Commando dagger most likely made in the 1990’s. There are no maker marks on this knife. The 2nd pattern knurled handle, cross guard and blade retain all of their original plated finish. The blade has just small areas of age related tarnish. The dagger is contained in its original wooden case covered with green leatherette material. The case has a hinged lid and 2 brass clasp fasteners . The inside of the case is lined with felt.
