**RARE WD BROAD ARROW 38 MARKED**WW2 British 2nd Pattern Fairbairn Sykes FS Commando Fighting Knife & Scabbard. Sn 23174:10 - 23174:10 2nd Pattern Fairbairn Sykes 'FS' Fighting Knives were introduced in 1941 (see page 89-93 of The Fairbairn Sykes Fighting Knife & Other Commando Knives By Flook). This is an original, WW2 2nd pattern, FS dagger and scabbard. The hilt is blackened brass with 2nd pattern knurled grip and blackened oval steel cross guard. The underside of one side of the cross guard is stamped with War Dept arrow 38 which is a known WW2 2nd pattern WD mark described as rare in the author’s book page 154 (the reference is illustrated in image 2). It has a clean blued 174 mm long double edged blade with medial ridge. Its original leather scabbard has an external blackened brass chape. The scabbard retains its original 4 sewn on leather tabs & elasticated retaining strap (most likely a period replacement). **SCARCE**EXCELLENT ORIGINAL BLUED BLADE**WW2 Era British WD (Broad Arrow 9 Marked) Fairbairn Sykes FS Commando Fighting Knife Beaded & Ribbed (9 Rows Of Beads) & Scabbard. Sn 23174:9 - 23174:9 The Beaded & Ribbed variant of the Fairbairn Sykes FS Fighting knife was available as a private purchase weapon but were also Military issue. Beaded & Ribbed versions have been found with 9,8,7 & 6 rows of beads (see page 127 of The Fairbairn Sykes Fighting Knife & Other Commando Knives by Ron Flook). This WW2 era Beaded and Ribbed Pattern Fairbairn Sykes fighting knife has a blackened brass beaded and ribbed grip with 9 rows of beads. The hilt has no visible WD marks. **RARE**WW2 FAT GRIP, 'Fat Boy', 2nd Pattern, Fairbairn Sykes FS Fighting Knife With WD Broad Arrow 4 Inspection Mark & Scabbard. Sn 23174:7 - 23174:7 2nd Pattern Fairbairn Sykes 'FS' Fighting Knives were introduced in 1941. This is a great example of the WW2, 2nd Pattern fighting knife. This has an original 'fat grip' oversized knurled brass grip produced to provide a greater grip for the bigger hand and are a rare pattern of FS dagger. This example has a blackened 170mm long double edged blade with medial ridge. The brass knurled grip is undamaged and is stamped with WD Broad arrow 4 mark which is a known WD mark found on Fat Boy Fs knives (see page 152 of The Fairbairn Sykes Fighting Knife & Other Commando Knives By Ron Flook (reference illustrated in image 2). It is complete with original leather scabbard. The scabbard with belt loop has its 4 sewn on leather tabs and original elasticated retaining strap. **CASED**MINT**RARE**C1948 2 PANEL VERSION**Wilkinson Sword, ‘Hand Forged By Tom Beasley The Famous Sword Smith’ Fairbairn Sykes FS Fighting Knife With Correct 2 Etched & Blued Panels Hand Drawn Blade. Sn 19917:8 - 19917:8 Tom Beasley was Wilkinson Sword's master Swordsmith. One of his outstanding creations was the blade for the sword which Britain presented to the people of the City of Stalingrad in commemoration of the City's defence against the Nazis. Tom Beasley knives are sought after. 3 panel version etchings 'Hand Forged by Tom Beasley The Famous Sword Smith Of Stalingrad Fame' and 2 panel versions without the panel referencing Stalingrad were made. The 2 panel versions the same as our example were made C1948. They are thought to be advertising & private purchase pieces for Wilkinson sword who undertook a sales drive in the early post war years (see page 182 & 183 of The Fairbairn Sykes Fighting Knife & Other Commando Knives by Flook). This is a near mint original hand drawn Tom Beasley FS Knife. Its 166mm long steel blade with medial ridge is clean and correctly crisply etched & blued on both sides. One side has a 2 panel banner etched 'Hand Forged by Tom Beasley The Famous Sword Smith’. The reverse is etched with decorative panels containing 'Wilkinson Sword, London' name and crossed swords legend together Royal Appointment. Also 'Commando Fighting Knife World War 1939-45'. The orange / brown hue Ivorine handle is undamaged and it has an oval blued steel cross guard. The dagger is contained in its later wooden case with hinged lid all covered in red leatherette material. The case has clasp fasteners. WW2 British Soldier’s Private Purchase Taylor Sheffield ‘Eye Witness’ Trademark F.S. Style Fighting Knife/Dagger & Scabbard Made From 1939 Pattern Leather. Sn 22998 - 22998 A WW2 private purchase F.S. style fighting knife / dagger by Taylor Eye Witness of Sheffield (this business began in 1828 when John Taylor (c.1792-1854) opened a small workshop in St Philip’s Road, Brookhill. He specialised in pen, pocket, and sportsman’s knives and was granted the striking ‘Eye Witness’ trade mark in 1838. The company name and trademark was later owned by NEEDHAM, VEALL & TYZACK LTD). These knives were private purchase weapons during WW2 (see page 179 item 12.1 in 'The Fairbairn-Sykes Fighting Knife and Other Commando Knives' book by Ron Flook). The pommel and cross guard are brass. It has a compressed leather rings grip which is in excellent condition. The small brass cross guard is oval. The FS style dagger blade with medial ridge measures 172mm and it is 288mm overall length. The blade has light staining consistent with age. One side of the blade has the maker’s name ‘Taylor Sheffield England’ and ‘Eye Witness’ trademark. The period scabbard is made of dark brown 1939 pattern leather as used in production of War time equipment. The open top scabbard has screw bolt reinforcement on the edges of the upper section. There is a small cut to the leather on one side of the throat which is old and stable consistent with the knife being drawn from the scabbard at some point in its life. The blade is crisply signed on one side "Taylor Witness Sheffield England" together with ‘all seeing eye’ trademark The original scabbard is brown leather. It has stitched and riveted edges & has an integral belt loop with retaining strap that has a press stud fastener (the retaining strap has shrunk a little with age and does not fully wrap around the hilt of the knife for fastening). Tom Beasley knives are sought after and early post war 1946-1949 Tom Beasley produced only approximately 500 hand drawn examples of FS knives for Wilkinson Sword who offered them as 'De Luxe Special' items. They are thought to be advertising & private purchase pieces for Wilkinson sword who undertook a sales drive in the early post war years (see pages 96 & 97, plates 477 & 478 of Fighting Knives By Fred Stephens and pages 182 & 183 of The Fairbairn Sykes Fighting Knife & Other Commando Knives by Flook). 2 panel scrolling banner without reference to Stalingrad and the more sought after 3 panel scrolling banner variants with Stalingrad fame were available. This is an excellent original hand drawn de luxe special Tom Beasley FS Knife With 3 panel scrolling etched & blued banner & correct scabbard. Its 178mm long steel blade with medial ridge is clean and correctly crisply etched & blued on both sides. One side has the correct 3 panel blued and etched scrolling banner ‘Hand Forged by Tom Beasley The Famous Sword Smith Of Stalingrad Sword Fame'. The reverse is etched with decorative panels containing 'Wilkinson Sword, London' name and crossed swords legend together Royal Appointment. Also 'Commando Fighting Knife World War 1939-45'. **RARE**ORIGINAL** WW1 / WW2 Alloy Hilt New Zealand Army Fighting Knife With Original Scabbard. Sn 22673 - 22673 The rare to find WW1 / WW2 era New Zealand made military fighting knives come in a number of forms, but all have the same alloy hilt with moulded chequering. The New Zealand made knives were popular with American Forces (see pages 214 & 216 plate 519 of British & Commonwealth Military Knives By Flook which illustrates an example with a hilt identical to ours). Our example has the correct cast alloy grip with moulded chequering and raised pommel ideal for striking during combat. The knife measures 10 ¾” overall with a clean 6” spear point steel blade. As is usual with these weapons there are no manufacturer, date or military markings on the knife. The knife is complete with its correct original brown leather open top scabbard which has a single belt loop. All leather, stitching and rivets of the scabbard are clean intact. WW2 Era American USMC Style Grey Finish Cast Alloy Ringed Hilt Variant Fairbairn Sykes FS Commando Fighting Knife & Scabbard. ED 2538 - ED 2538 This is an original WW2 Era American USMC Style Cast Alloy Ringed Hilt Variant Fairbairn Sykes FS Commando Fighting Knife (see page 139 of Flook’s book The Fairbairn Sykes Fighting Knife & Other Commando knives where similar USMC type hilt variants are illustrated). The author comments that these knives are something of a mystery as to their origins & no examples have been noted to indicate official issue. The hilts are cast from alloy with ringed finishes, the guard is integral with the hilt and has a fillet on the underside similar to that found on the WW2 USMC stiletto. They have been recorded in a number of finishes such as blackened hilt finish, copper hilt finish , grey hilt finish and Green paint hilt. Our example has the correct one piece cast grey finish alloy handle with correct rings and integral cross guard with fillet on the underside. The undamaged blade with medial ridge measures 174 mm. The knife is complete with original WW2 era leather scabbard. The dark brown leather scabbard has a single, long, riveted belt loop and external steel chape. **RARE**WW2 Era Nickel Plated All Steel Hilt Variant Fairbairn Sykes FS Commando Fighting Knife & Scabbard. Sn 21845 - 21845 Like many variants of the FS knife there are various theories as to the origins of the all steel FS knives. Generally put about is that they were dropped into Europe for use by the resistance. There is also anecdotal evidence indicating use by Home guard. At least one of these knives was recovered in the wreck of a Sherman tank which sank off the coast of Normandy during the D-Day invasion (see pages 131 to 133 of ‘The Fairbairn Sykes Fighting Knife & Other Commando Knives’ by Flook). An all steel plated variant hilt FS knife with 5 knurled grip rings and narrow grip near to the pommel similar to ours is illustrated on page 133 item 9.21 of the authors book. He comments on the illustrated knife, that the plating was probably done post war for presentation or private sale purposes. The author also comments on page 131 “whether or not they were made against an official contract is unknown and no example that I am aware of has been found with an inspection mark. Genuine examples of such knives are scarce”. This is a rare, original all steel hilt nickel plated variant FS knife and scabbard in as found, un-cleaned condition. It’s all steel hilt has the aforementioned 5 knurled grip rings and plated oval steel finger guard. The original nickel plate finish has some age related areas of tarnishing. There are no maker or date marks on the knife. The knife has a 173 mm long blade with medial ridge. Its open top leather scabbard in which it was found has an integral belt loop.
