The Reichsarbeitsdienst (RAD, "Reich Labour Service") was a major organisation established by Nazi Germany as an agency to help militarize the civilian workforce and indoctrinate it with Nazi ideology. It was the official state labour service, divided into separate sections for men and women. From June 1935 onwards, men aged between 18 and 25 had to serve six months before their military service. During World War II compulsory service also included young women and the RAD developed to an auxiliary formation which provided support for the Wehrmacht armed forces. Hundreds of RAD units also received training as anti-aircraft units and were deployed as RAD Flak Batteries. Several RAD units also performed combat on the eastern front as infantry. As the German defences were devastated, more and more RAD Units were committed to combat. During the final months of the war RAD men formed 6 major frontline units, which were involved with serious fighting. On the western front RAD troops were used as reinforcements to the 9th SS Engineer Abt (SS-Captain Moeller) in the fighting to retake the northern end of the Arnhem bridge from British Paratroopers under Col. Frost. Like most Nazi organisations the RAD was authorised a separate Hewer / dagger for its enlisted men as well as Officer / Leader ranks (see pages 67-71 of Atwood’s book ‘The Daggers & Edged Weapons Of Hitler’s Germany’). The enlisted man’s Hewer adopted in 1934 was initially also worn by Sgts and Officers. These daggers had heavy stag antler grips. This is an original Nazi RAD man’s Hewer. It has a 9 ¾” long blade with fullers and measures 14 ¾” overall. The blade is marked by the manufacturer 'Carl Jul Crebbs Solingen' & the trademark. The National Socialist Motor Corps (Nationalsozialistisches Kraftfahrkorps, or NSKK) was a Nazi paramilitary organization that conducted training in the operation of motorcycles and automobiles, and also transported Nazi Party and SA personnel. It was founded in 1931, as a successor to the National Socialist Automobile Corps. The organization and ranks in the NSKK were similar to that of the SA. It focused on fitness in motoring skills, including maintenance and use of both military and civilian vehicles. NSKK members assisted with traffic direction, as well as the transportation of personnel involved with constructing the bunker system on Germany’s western frontier. Starting with the outbreak of war in 1939, the NSKK assisted the German armed forces, providing infrastructural support. As with most uniformed organizations in the Third Reich, the NSKK had a myriad of specific regalia and insignia, each with its own distinct purpose and meaning. From 1937, these daggers were bestowed by NSKK Corps Leader Adolf Hühnlein. This is a very rare original 1936 pattern NSKK Leaders Dagger. NSKK Officer’s of senior rank wore the same dagger with black scabbard as the lower rank officer’s and enlisted men but it was suspended by a metal double chain hanger which necessitated another fitting in the centre of the scabbard as on our example (see pages 58 & 59 of The daggers & edged weapons of Hitler’s Germany by Atwood). The dark brown wooden grip is original and undamaged. The Nazi German National Emblem and 'SA' roundel are perfectly fitted to the undamaged original wood hilt. It has the correct Nickel plated cross guard & pommel. The guard is stamped ‘BO’. The clean blade has the correct ‘Alles Fur Deutschland’ inscription on one side and makers name and trademark ‘Malsch Karl Spitzer Steinbach’ (made only circa 2,000 1933 pattern daggers and are rated rarity 9 (10 being the rarest) in ‘The service daggers of the SA & The NSKK’ by Siegert). The lack of RZM marks on the blade indicates that this is an early production piece. The hilt is fitted with original bullion cord and portepee. The dagger is complete with its original black anodised metal scabbard with correct centre mount. The scabbard has 2 hanging rings, chape and throat mount all nickel plated. The scabbard is fitted with correct original nickel plated link hanging chain. The chain has the correct alternating embossed Nazi National emblem, Swastika & NSKK emblems. The chain has a single sprung clip correctly embossed with Acorn & Oak leaves. The rear of 2 of the links are marked. One with ‘Musterschutz NSKK Korpsfuhrung’ the other is marked ‘RZM M5/8’ (which is the Nazi code for the maker Assman). The clip is fitted with original leather tab belt hanger. The price for this rare, complete, NSKK Senior Officer’s Dagger set includes UK delivery. Sn 22560
