Nazi German National Forestry Service (Reichsforstamt) Marked Clamshell Boar & Stag Hunting Forester’s Dagger / Sidearm With Original Steel Mounted Leather Scabbard & Skinning Knife. Sn 23174:16 - 23174:16
In order to control and preserve the natural resources of the national forests, the National Forestry Service (Reichsforstamt) was established under the supervision of the Reich Minister and head of the Luftwaffe, Hermann Goering. The administration of all conservation measures pertaining to timber and wild life was the major task of this governmental branch. This included prescribing all of the game laws and hunting regulations. Control was sub delegated to regional or district forestry officials known as Forester, who were highly trained, full time, government representatives expert in all fields of hunting and conservation. They wore an official green uniform and can be compared to the federal and state game wardens found in the United States. In cases where estates and lands were owned and controlled privately, forestry officials were hired by the landowner rather than the national government. These private forestry officials also wore similar uniforms, but with different insignia, and were permitted to wear the same daggers authorized for the members of the National Forestry Service. There were several ranks within the Forestry Service, among which were: trainees, assistant foresters, senior foresters and forestry administrative officials. The lower officials and assistant foresters were authorized sidearms with staghorn grips only. The foresters and senior officials were permitted to purchase side arms with ivory or imitation ivory (white celluloid) grips. The choice of ivory as opposed to white celluloid was optional; however, the ivory grips cost an additional four Reich Marks ($1.60). The design of all these official forestry side arms were very similar. Variations in design were due to the different dagger manufacturers. This is an National Forestry Service (Reichsforstamt) Marked Clamshell Boar & Stag Hunting Forester’s Dagger / Sidearm. These substantial weapons were carried when hunting large game such as Boar for self defence and to deliver the 'death blow' to the hunted prey. This example has a heavy Stag Antler hilt with heavy metal fittings including cross guard with Stag hoof finials, large clamshell, ferrule and grooved pommel cap with acorn finial. The ferrule has an engraved ‘Swastika on Oak Leaf’ badge of the Nazi Forestry Service, above monogram on the cross guard which may indicate that this dagger may have been made in the Imperial German era and then carried by a Nazi Forester. Its heavy 36mm broad blade is clean & sharp with no damage to the cutting edge. The blade is 302mm length and the spine is 6mm thick at its widest. The blade has no maker marks. The dagger is 450mm overall length. The weapon is complete with its original steel mounted leather scabbard with heavy metal fittings consisting of a large throat mount with frog bars which has an integral steel holster for its skinning knife. The skinner has a Stag antler scales, clean 120mm long steel blade (200mm overall length). The leather & stitching of the scabbard are clean & intact with just light service wear. The dagger is fitted with period black leather frog with large belt loop. There are no visible maker or date marks on the frog. The price for this quality Nazi marked sidearm includes UK delivery. **Original**WW2 Era Nazi German Bullion Hangers For Nazi German Heer (Army) Officer’s 1935 Pattern Daggers. N 161 - N 161
Nazi German Heer (Army) officer dagger hangers were a mandatory, privately purchased uniform accessory introduced in May 1935. They were designed to suspend the ceremonial dress dagger from the officer's belt or pocket area when a sabre was not being worn. The hangers were typically made of two straps of fabric, often featuring a silver-coloured face made of woven aluminium / bullion flat wire, backed with velvet in colours such as field grey, dark green, or tan the same as our example. The straps feature metallic fittings, including oval buckles, adjustable slides, and spring clips to attach to the dagger's scabbard. The metal parts of the hangers are made from zinc, with an oak leaf pattern. A large, open clip loop at the top of the assembly was used to attach the entire hanger and dagger assembly to the officer's uniform belt or an internal uniform pocket hanger. The material of our example has some service wear but is clean and intact and the clips are nice and strong. The price includes UK delivery.
