Original Large Framed, American WW2 1940-1944 Colour Lithograph ‘Belgium Fights On’ Propaganda / Recruitment Poster By The Belgian Artist R. Sturbelle Published By The Belgian Information Center New York USA. Sn 15182 - 15182 After the German occupation of Belgium in May 1940, a Belgian Government in Exile was set up in London, while in 1942 the Belgian League was established to organise resistance to the Germans. The purpose of this poster was to encourage support within America for the Belgian resistance cause. In the diagonal sweep of the composition, the image of the bound prisoners facing the German firing squad is counteracted by the avenging Belgian soldier and the thrust of the fighter aircraft. The artwork was by R. Sturbelle, whose name suggests he was himself Belgian and the posters were published between 1940 & 1944 by the American Belgian Information Center, New York. The Colour lithograph paper poster retains all of its original vivid colour and has no staining or damage. The composition comprises a cluster of four bound prisoners in the upper left corner before a firing squad of helmeted soldiers who stand on the diagonal at the right. The central image shows three war planes flying in formation. In the lower centre, printed in full colour, is a charging soldier thrusting his bayonet, seen from above. Large red type is printed across three lines: "Belgium Fights On". The signature of the artist “R. Sturbelle” is printed in grey in upper right corner. “Published by the Belgian Information Center 630 Fifth Street New York City” is printed in black across the lower margin of the poster together with a small printed Union Registration mark. The poster is mounted in a later dark wood frame with clear laminate plastic window. The poster in its frame measures 32” x 26” x ½” and the rear is mounted with cord for wall hanging. NB. Complete and Original WW1 'Der Weltkrieg' (World War) 1914-1918 German Commemorative Cigarette Card Album By Cigaretten-Bilderdienst Dresden. Sn 14401:2 - 14401:2 Original and complete cigarette card collector's book titled Der Weltkrieg (The World War) compiled in Germany in 1937 as a commemoration of World War I. This scrapbook for cigarette cards from the 1930s provides an invaluable pictorial record of World War I. It captures the German perspective of the War in picture and writing and functions as a reference book for multiple generations. It features 270 full-colour cigarette cards, all are present and securely fixed, illustrating significant German battles and events. The scrapbook was issued by Cigaretten-Bilderdienst Dresden. This scrapbook captures the German perspective of World War I in pictures and writing. Themes such as nationalism, armed forces, everyday life during the war and stereotypical images of the enemy forces are referenced by the visual iconography. Through the chapters the progression of the war is illustrated. The individual sections are organised around each year of the war, 1914-18. The introduction to each chapter lists the different theatres and progression of the war. This summary is followed by sections, which under individual headings like 'Reason and Start of War', display cigarette cards and a short description of the image on that card. The first chapter also features a map of Belgium, France, Germany and parts of Switzerland in 1914 with the German armies and their campaigns. The appendix features cards depicting life behind the front line, the war in the colonies, and Germany's enemies. While the cigarette cards are in colour, the chapters are predominantly printed in sepia. The exception are maps of the East and West front, and the battles in Italy, Serbia and the Orient, which took place in 1915. The book measures 13 3/4" x 10 1/4". The price includes UK delivery. WW2 Period Aluminium Wash Bowl And Leather Bound Carrier Top With Labels To Major F.C. Green, 'M.C.' of the Royal Tank Regiment. Sn 14334 - 14334 This is a WW2 period aluminium wash bowl and leather bound top which belonged to Major F. C. Green M.C. of the Royal Tank Regiment. The Royal Tank Regiment (RTR) is the oldest tank unit in the world, being formed by the British Army in 1916 during the Great War. Today, it is the armoured regiment of the British Army's 1st Armoured Infantry Brigade. Formerly known as the Tank Corps and the Royal Tank Corps, it is part of the Royal Armoured Corps. Major Green was in the 4th Royal Tank Regiment. The 4th and the 7th had been destroyed fighting side by side in Tobruk but the Army Board took the decision that neither would be lost in the Order of Battle. It was a singular recognition of what they had together achieved during their remarkable history. This washbowl and top is complete with labels, one brown label attached by string showing it was owned by "Major F. C. Green MC Royal Tank Regt. Empire Ke. - Port Said" and on the reverse "Via Liverpool St and Waterloo To Southampton Central". The top is 16" across with a leather rolled stitched edge. One label says "Cabin". The washbowl top is in excellent condition. It has four leather tongues through which a thin leather strap is threaded and secured with a steel buckle. RARE, Victorian Or Earlier Medieval / Italian Renaissance Form Battle Shield With Ornate Decoration. Sn 13597 - 13597 The Victorian era saw a revival of interest of objects from the renaissance and ancient medieval cultures that influenced architecture, decoration, furnishings and art. This renewed awareness led to an intense affinity of arms and armour from those periods of history and production of quality authentic reproduction arms and armour. This is a fine medieval / renaissance form battle shield. Its excellent quality and form indicates that it is either a Victorian reproduction or possibly a much earlier piece. The iron shield is 23” diameter with a rope effect and riveted rim. The surface of the shield is elegantly convex and has a pyramid form 3” spike in its centre mounted on a stylised rose form boss, which in its original form would allow the carrier to strike opponent’s, allowing the shield to be used for both defence and attack. This form also provides strength to the structure and would assist deflection of striking weapons. The whole surface of the shield has beautifully etched panels in the Italian Renaissance style featuring religious, hunting, and battle iconography. The shield retains its original shape and original 4 carry strap lugs. The rear of the shield has its original leather riveted padding and a later steel wire carry handle or wall hanger cord secured to 2 of the lugs. The shield has even patina and no damage. Excellent Victorian Copy of a heavy duty close combat Medieval Fighting Shield In Steel and Brass. Sn 13485 - 13485 An excellent faithfully and professionally made Victorian copy of a heavy duty Medieval defensive fighting shield. The shield is all metal construction and is lined on the inside in coarse linen. It has a spiked centre boss on the front. The shield also has seven decorative brass stars inlaid on the front as well as a raised symmetrical pattern in the centre. It features a coned shaped spike centre boss. The centre boss is riveted to the shield. The shield has a half round brass edge riveted to the edge. On the inside it has an arm brace and hand grip, both solid and made from metal. The inside is very neatly lined in linen and stitched. The shield measures 20" across. This is a very nicely constructed medieval fighting shield. It weighs 7.8KGs. The price includes UK delivery.
