This Armour Piercing Capped/Trace (APC/T) round is headstamped on the brass cartridge case 17 PR I LOT 111 VAEL (Vickers Armstrong Engineering Limited) 1943 (1943 date) CF (Cordite Full Charge). DEACTIVATED INERT. French, 1893 Dated French 37mm (37 x 94R) Hotchkiss Revolving Cannon Base Fused HE (High Explosive) Round. - O 1904
DEACTIVATED INERT. This is an unfired early French made 37mm (37 x 94R) Hotchkiss base fused high explosive (H.E.) round for the Hotchkiss revolving cannon that was invented by Benjamin Hotchkiss in 1872 and consisted of 5 37mm barrels revolving in a similar to the American Gatling gun. The gun could be mounted on a 2 wheeled carriage or on a solid ship mount. The Hotchkiss projectile had a 30mm long brass solid driving band which unfortunately left a lot of brass fouling in the rifleing when being fired. The gun was popular at the time but was replaced by the Vickers 1 pounder Pom Pom gun which was a single barrelled water cooled automatic belt fed cannon with a greater rate of fire. the Pom Pom had the same cartridge case dimensions as the Hotchkiss (37 x 94R). The brass cartridge case is headstamped LOT.12 Px 93 (1893 date). The steel base fused high explosive projectile has a single 30mm long brass driving band. The projectile is stamped on its base with the number 6241. The price includes UK delivery and no licence is required to possess inert fuses in the UK if retained as part of a collection or display.
