INERT DEACTIVATED. This is an original Kynoch 10 round carton of Kynoch .30 Rimless rifle cartridges for the U.S.A. model 1906. This cartridge was originally the American 30-03 service cartridge for the Springfield bolt action rifle with a 220 grain bullet but in the quest for better ballistics, a lighter pointed bullet was adopted with the round being renamed the 30-06 that had a slightly shorter neck. The round was used successfully in several game rifles and this is a Kynoch loading with a 220 grain soft nosed nickel jacketed bullets. The loading was originally with No. 1 Powder. The brass cartridge case is headstamped KYNOCH .30 U.S. and have a brass percussion primer. The cartridges are protected inside the box by a wrap of greaseproof paper round them. There is a loose buff coloured Kynoch inspection label inside the box. The two piece cardboard buff coloured box has an orange Kynoch label wrapped round it and sealed with glue. The label has printed in black the description of the contents. Kynoch was established in Witton in Birmingham in 1862 by Scottish entrepreneur George Kynoch when he opened a percussion cap factory in Witton.[1] In 1895 he built an explosives factory east of Shell Haven Creek, Essex (now known as Coryton). This opened in 1897, with an estate for employees called Kynochtown. The company produced cordite, guncotton, gunpowder, and cartridges. After World War I many of the UK ammunition and explosives manufacturers were brought together under Nobel Explosives to become Nobel Industries, which was a founding element of Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd (ICI) in 1926 This is a vintage 100 round cardboard box of 16 bore, centre fire 6 shot cartridges with the Purdey loading using EC propellant. E.C. stood for the Explosives Company of Stowmarket who introduced a smokeless powder in 1882. The cartridge cases are headstamped ELEY-KYNOCH 16 ICI monogram 16 (16 bore). The white top wad has printed on it E.C. (Explosives Company of Stowmarket) PURDEY LOADING 6 (shot size). The cartridges have a dark blue paper cartridge case with a brass base and a copper percussion primer. The box measures 8 5/8” by 8 inches and 2 5/8 inches in height. The white box lid is printed in red on all sides as to the contents of 100 16 bore Eley- Kynoch ’PEGAMOID’ waterproof, gastight, metal lined cartridges.
