c1750 Silver metal Hilt Court / Diplomatic Small Sword With Blued & Gilt Blade. ED 2626. - ED 2626 The small sword (also court sword, French: epée de cour or dress sword) is a light one-handed sword designed for thrusting which evolved out of the longer and heavier rapier of the late Renaissance. The height of the small sword's popularity was between mid-17th and late 18th century. It is thought to have appeared in France and spread quickly across the rest of Europe. The small sword was the immediate predecessor of the French duelling sword (from which the epée developed. This is an excellent original c1750 Court / Diplomatic small sword (see pages 270 to 282 of Wither’s book ‘World Swords’ where many variants of small sword are illustrated. It has a silver metal hilt with part bowl guard and knuckle bow. The urn crown pommel has a ball top. The slim 82 cm blade is straight and undamaged and has just staining consistent with age. The blade has its original hilt washer & etched panels on both sides featuring geometric designs. The sword measures 99 ½ cm overall. The leather scabbard has an aged patina with brass ornate chape and locket with a fancy frog stud. The owners name is inscribed to the rear of the locket: ‘Count Ferdinand de Baillet’ (A Count Ferdinand Charles Louis Antoine de Baillet–Latour (21 January 1850 – 18 September 1925) was a Belgian politician. He was governor of the province of Antwerp from 14 March 1908 until 31 December 1912. Baillet-Latour was born and died in Brussels. Ferdinand de Baillet-Latour was a member of the Antwerp provincial council for the canton Ekeren from 1 July 1902 until 14 March 1908. He was a member of the village council of Brasschaat from 1902 until 1908 and from 1913 until 1824. He was burgomaster of Brasschaat from 1902 until 1908, where he succeeded Armand Reussens, and (provincial) senator in the Belgian Senate from 1912 until 1921).The price for this attractive Court / Diplomatic small sword includes UK delivery. British 1897 Pattern Henry Wilkinson London Officer's Sword With Etched Blade Inscribed Monogram ‘HG Monogram’, Blade number 26504 Scabbard & Leather Foul Weather Cover. Sn 21226 - 21226 This is a very good, 1897 pattern Infantry Officer's Sword By Henry Wilkinson. It has a 32 ¼” long blade with partial fullers. The blade has just light staining consistent with age & etched on both sides with decorative foliate panels & Queen’s crown with Royal Cypher ‘VR’ Victoria Regina’. The blade is also etched by the manufacturer 'Henry Wilkinson Pall Mall London' together with Royal Warrant and has the ordnance acceptance star with roundel. One side of the blade is inscribed with stylised monogram ‘combined HG’ Palm tree crest and indistinct motto within banner most likely a family crest of the original Officer who owned this sword. The back of the blade is numbered '26504' (Wilkinson keep records of their blades and it may be possible to determine the date the sword was manufactured and who commissioned it). It has a full 1897 Pattern knuckle guard with Victorian Crown VR (Victoria Regina) device. It has a stepped pommel with ball top, fish skin grip with wire binding all complete and intact. It comes with its original steel scabbard with 2 hanging rings and original leather foul weather cover with full flap cover, retaining strap with buckle and rear carry loop. **MINT POLISH**WW2 Kai Gunto Japanese Navy Officer’s Tachi Sword With Taiseiko Stainless Steel Blade Smith Signed ‘HIRO TOSHI SAKU’ & Toyokawa Naval Arsenal Anchor Mark, Scabbard & Expert Assessment. Sn 21256 - 21256 This sword has been assessed by a UK based Japanese sword expert Bill Tagg. His assessment accompanies this piece. In exerts from the assessment he states “Kai Gunto Navy officer’s tachi with a type of Taiseiko stainless steel blade, with anchor in circle stamp. The mark of Toyokawa Naval Arsenal. A lot of these swords were sold by the Naval officer’s association / club. The blade is Abura Yaki-Ire (oil hardened) with fake hamon put on with stone (not traditionally). In practically mint original polish signed ‘HIRO TOSHI SAKU’ Artisan working for Navy Arsenal only one mentioned in my books). Kosherai mounts are mid war quality, Tsuka, not wrapped in fish skin but black hessian with original cord knot loop. Lighter stamped fittings with more of a wash than gilding complete binding. Tsuba & O seppa all steel with dark finish (instead of bronze) all marked ‘242’ a set. Saya is wood wrapped in fish skin and polished metal fittings. It is missing its slide on seme gane & bottom fitting (saya jiri). In reasonable condition for its age. A nice example getting harder to find Navy swords” In his illustrations he translates the Smith signature as above. He describes the cutting edge length as 66 cms and the overall length as just under 86 cms. He also describes other blade characteristics and measurements which can be read in the images. Victorian / Edwardian Era Cane Sword Stick With Bone Handle & Diamond Section Dagger Blade. Sn 21326 - 21326 An excellent original Victorian / Edwardian era Brown Malacca Sword Stick. It has a 16” flattened diamond section steel blade which is straight and undamaged and brass ferrule. The blade has staining consistent with age. The dagger measures 20 ½” overall. In its scabbard the sword stick measures 34 ¼” overall. It has a solid polished bone handle. The cane scabbard has a later applied brass end cap stamped ‘CC2L1.5’. The price includes UK delivery. Victorian / Edwardian Era Briar Sword Stick With Flat Diamond Form Blade Mounted With Coldstream Guards Regiment Badge. Sn 21302 - 21302 An attractive Victorian / Edwardian Era Sword Stick. It has a 21 ¾” flat diamond form blade which has staining and aged patina. It measures 26 ¾” overall and has a curved Briar handle. The tip of the handle is mounted with a white metal and enamel Regiment badge (the Coldstream Guards are one of the 5 Foot Guards Regiments in the British Army Household Division - the personal troops of Her Majesty the Queen. Formed in 1650 as part of the New Model Army during the English Civil War, the Coldstream Guards swore allegiance to King Charles II in 1660 and has guarded the country's monarchs since. The Regiment’s anniversary is 23rd April (St George’s Day). The Regiment has fought in every major conflict involving British troops since their creation). Victorian / Edwardian Era Bamboo Dagger Sword Stick With Flat Diamond Form Blade & Root Ball Handle. Sn 21165 - 21165 A very good Victorian / Edwardian Era Sword Stick. It has a 10 ¾”flat diamond form dagger blade which has just staining consistent with age & tapers to a pin sharp point. It measures 18 ¾” overall and has a bulbous root ball handle. The sword stick measures 36” overall in its scabbard. The hilt has a brass ferrule with push button retaining catch which holds it firmly in the scabbard. The scabbard has a conical brass end cap. MATCHING DATE & REGIMENT MARKS British WD 1893 Dated 1885 Pattern Cavalry Troopers Sword With German Made Weyersberg Kirschbaum & Co Solingen Regiment Marked ‘Y NTBH’ To The Northumberland Yeomanry Hussars & Scabbard. Sn 17136:4 - 17136:4 There were two distinctions for which the Northumberland (Hussars) were especially proud. The first was that the regiment was the sole ‘Imperial Service’ Yeomanry regiment before the Great War, during which the second distinction was that the First Line was the first Territorial Force unit in action. The Northumberland (Hussars) could trace its origins to December 1819 when the Northumberland and Newcastle Volunteer Corps of Cavalry formed, under the command of Charles John Brandling, of Gosforth House. Justification for its formation was attributed to the revolutionary spirit then especially prevalent in the North of England. On a pro rata basis Northumberland and Durham sent more volunteers to South Africa than any other district. Ninety-seven officers and men of the contingents from the two counties gave their lives for their country in the South African campaign. This is an excellent original, 1885 Pattern British Cavalry Troopers Sword with Scabbard both Regiment marked to the Northumberland Yeomanry Hussars & dated 1893. These swords were designed during the period when the British army was continuing to argue on the merits of the ‘cut’ versus the ‘thrust’ of British cavalry blades. The hilt design features a Maltese Cross motif cut into the knuckle guard and is a distinctive feature of these swords (see pages 48 – 57 of Swords Of The British army by Robson). The Sword’s fullered 34 ¼” blade has just light staining consistent with age. It measures 39 ½” overall length. The grip strap and blade have WD inspection marks. The ricasso is marked by the German manufacturer ‘Weyersberg Kirschbaum & Co Solingen’. The back of the blade has inspection marks. The knuckle guard has the correct Maltese cross motif which has Regiment marks ‘‘Y NTBH’ To The Northumberland Yeomanry Hussars it is also dated ‘11/1893’ (November 1893) & weapon number ‘121’. It has the correct boiled leather chequered scales in very good condition secured by the correct 5 rivets. It is complete with its steel scabbard which has 2 fixed hanging rings. **MATCHING DATES**1896 Dated British WD 1856 Pattern Wilkinson London Pioneer’s Sawback Short Sword Sidearm With Brass Hilt & 1896 WD Scabbard. Sn 21062 - 21062 This is an excellent 1856 Pattern British Pioneers Sawback Short Sword Sidearm. (see page 173 of Robson's Swords of the British Army). It has a broad 22 ½” blade with deeply cut sawback (27 ½” overall). The blade has just light staining consistent with age. One side of the blade has crisp maker mark Wilkinson London together with ‘12 ’96 date (December 1896). The blade also has crisp British WD ordnance inspection marks. It has a heavy ribbed Brass handle with full knuckle bow, slotted for lanyard. The sidearm is complete with original leather scabbard with brass mounts.
